Chilliwack River, February 23rd 2012
« on: February 23, 2012, 10:09:53 PM »

today was my birthday so i took the day off school and went to the river. The rivers good but the fishing wasn't great, belowe the crossing there was 2 feet vis. and at allison pool above the clay banks crystal clear, belowe about 3-4 feet. Caught a nice big wild buck and lost another smaller steely. Alot of solid hits and float downs but i just couldn't set em  :-\ i think my roe bags were a bit big and covering the hook tho.

You guys using steelhead roe? I have some Pautzke's cured chum roe that I was going to save for coho, but I'm tired of not even getting a sniff... at this point, I'd be stoked just to see my float go down.  :-\

The water was really nice today.

Happy Birthday steelie-slayer! ;)

Yesterday was mine but didn't seek for a birthday fish since the river was not in the best shape. We decided to wait until today for optimal condition. ;D Gave Chris a phone call in the morning for the usual early report before we ventured out for the afternoon excursion. The morning crowd seemed pretty thick but it quickly thinned off as expected after we arrived at 12:30pm. :) We saw a few fish landed and lost, a good indication there was a pretty good push so I was quite optimistic.

After trying for two hours, there finally was some action. We waited for two anglers finishing a stretch that produced for me two weeks ago. One of them already had a fish on the beach while the other worked his way through. Once they were done, we moved in to give it a go. It took me three casts for the float to disappear. Actually, the float didn't really disappear, the fish grabbed the pink worm just as I started retrieving it. The sudden tug felt almost better than the sight of a float dive. :)

It was a hatchery marked fish, not a mis-clipped this time. ;D The fish was over 10lb, but not much bigger. It was short, but broad. The tail was quite thick that my hand couldn't get a good grip of it. Although it was a retainable fish, I noticed that it was not that silver. The body had a bit of coppery shine to it and the pink cheek was starting to show. I kept it in the water while deciding for a few seconds whether I wanted to retain it or not, since I am so desperate for meat. ;D Nina took a few photos. I decided not to keep it and was about to hold it up for one good shot of the fish, but the fish slipped away from the hand easily and swam away quickly.

The float went down for the second time half an hour later, but this time it came up empty. The rest of the afternoon produced nothing for us, but it was once again very nice to be fishing without many anglers in sight. :) Good luck to those who are going out this weekend.

I wouldn't waste my bait. Steelhead aren't chemical junkies the way salmon are, heavily cured bait typically does not fare well compared to more natural presentations.

Agreed.  I've been using natural cures (i.e. borax based) as opposed to sulfite based cures for my roe.  If you're using the same cure for salmon - like Pautzke's Fire Cure, or Pro-cure, then it will contain sulfites.

You can't get them all, but I am sure you will have a great season this year.  :)

We've been using Pautzke cured salmon roe (coho I think) tied into sacs and so far it has produced four fish, but that doesn't really say anything since many others have caught way more fish than us. ;D Make sure they're tied in sacs not threaded onto the hook as chunks, which fall off too easily. With that being said, I've encountered more fish with a single Jensen egg and a small piece of wool (usually orange egg + white/chartreuse wool) than roe in the past.
