bull trout vedder?
« on: March 14, 2012, 06:36:01 PM »

Are bull trout worth targeting in the vedder these days? Would a 5 wt fly rod be to light for the vedder targeting bull trout?

I don't think there are that many out there, have not caught one this season, you will catch a steelhead before you get a bull trout. ;D

upper river you will find more, Everyday seems to find some hogs every year. Biggest I've caught was about 5 pounds but the majority are 12"-16"

That's funny, I have landed 6 this year already, all in the LOWER river all on the fly!!

Steelhead on the other hand has been REALY tough on the fly for me this year. Usually i have landed at least 4-6 by now, so far 2 on, ZERO landed!!

No bull trout for me either, but I was finally rewarded with a headshake as my pink squidro fly reached the middle of a run in the lower river today. I set the hook and battled this 14 pound hatchery buck to the beach for my first steelhead of the season.

That is pretty cool Sandman.
Must have been fun on the single hander. :)

Yep upper is my home for sure  ;)
Buggers always make me think they are steelies at first, until I see the big mouth open like a windsock  ;D
At least they make for a pretty pic  8)

I tend to find them much more in july/august when fly fishing in the lower, most are around 12-18 inches though that time of year.
Most of the ones I find Feb-April are larger, say 2-6 pnds generally, with some bigger.

Thanks gents, it was fun on the single hander.  That's my late father's St. John and his Sage launch that I just had warranty repaired through Fred's.  That scrappy buck had another angler's pink jig fly in his mouth when I landed it (maybe one of Rick's lost fish).  That was a huge tail Hue-nut, and I am sorry I did not take a close-up of it for you, but I took the picture with my phone.  That was my first steelie this year and I have not gotten any bulls either.  The run I took this  fish in has produced big bulls in the past (one 10 pounder last year by a guy floating roe), at least a half dozen trips over this past winter produced nothing.
