Bucktailing Reel
« on: March 22, 2012, 04:08:33 PM »

I'm taking the old polar hair skip-fly fishing back to heart- no weight, no spinner, just skipping the fly on the surface. I found two nice 11 ft 8 wt rods, perfect for where i will be (Haida Gwaii). I'm curious if anyone knows a good saltwater reel- nothing princely expensive, but will do the job and last the run of coho and a few springs. I will be using mono, not fly line. I've a couple of reels in mind, but I thought it'd be good to check with some epople who just might have an opinion on such things! ;)

Try to find a JW Young Windex. They are great mooching or bucktailing reels...

my suggestion would be Lamson Guru 4.0. That reel is resonable in price around $250 seal drag and 100% saltwater proof...  Due to a thinner side wall of a fly reel, if you gonna use mono remember to put lots of backing. Really, 100 of 15-20lb monio is enough. If the fish do run over hundred yard, start chasing!!  IF the Guru is over budget, try to look for a Sea King mooching reel. Its about the same size of the Guru but only 1/3 of the price. Remember, you get what you pay for.. Buy the best you can afford.

If you want Old School then a Daiwa 175B can be had cheap as can a 275B (I have few I'll let go of).

Thanks, guys- I have some 175s and 275s left over from earlier days- the 275 is waaaaaaay too big, and I never liked the drag system of these particular Diawas. I still have a couple of Shimano GT 1000s from back then, too, and they're in great condition.

Steelhead King, thanks for the trip down memory lane with the Sea King- not for the reel, but because they're made by Kilwell- they also made the 1st mooching rod I ever had! I also caught my 1st steelhead with it on the Cowie (coupled with a Diawa Millionaire II). I also checked into the Lamson Guru. They looked great, and would be perfect, but unless I come into some money, they'll be on my dream list. I like the idea of the sealed drag, but until I can afford it, I guess I'll have to put up with the Shimanos. They balance pretty well with the long rods.

Thank for all your advice, guys- I wish you all the best!

Hio, and Heck if you are going old school with just a grey ghost bucktail, why not get a Peetz? They make them every day, and they are all over the fleabag for cheap.
