boating questions
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:46:59 AM »

I am not having any luck so far in locating any small boat rentals for lakes in B.C.. I was wondering if I borrow a small boat from a friend here in Utah, can I take it into B.C.. The boat is a little 12 ft aluminum that would fit on top of my vehicle and is currently registered and licensed in Utah. Are there any special rules that I need to be aware of. I will be fishing around the Vancouver area. I have never fished a river before so I am trying to figure out ways to go fishing and up my odds at catching a fish, preferably salmon. I have been looking into fishing stump lake or kawawa lake but I don't know where that one is. Thanks again for all your help, I can't wait to arrive in Vancouver that 1st week of May.

I thought you might have an issue with a pleasure boat operator's card (necessary for all boat use) but it looks like you are ok:

Q. What if I don’t live in Canada, but boat there?
A. Non-residents only need to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card if they are operating their powered boat in Canadian waters for more than 45 consecutive days or if the boat they are operating is registered or licensed in Canada (this includes rented boats).

"Powered boats" include those powered by electric motors.

There is a ton of rules regarding safety equipment (life jacket, bailing can, whistle, etc) that you should take a look at.

Stump is a pretty big lake (north of Merritt) - never fished it but you might have some issues in a small boat.
Kawkawa is near Hope.

You will want to fish a fairly low elevation lake as many higher elevation lakes in the Merritt - Kamloops corridor will still have ice in early May.
