Why would one choose a 8-0 over a 8-6 over a 9-0 or vice versa?

Longer rod for rivers helps with mending the line to control fly drift .

shorter rod for boats because they are a bit easier to land a fish with

some say the 8'6" is the ideal length for a single hand rod , creates tight loops when casting etc.

there are probably many more theories out there .

You can cast longer distance with a longer rod then you can with a shorter rod. I prefer a longer rod when fishin chronies and any time I'm on a river that allows for a longer rod. All my fly rods 5 wt and up are 9ft.  and up. My 3 wt is 8'6 for fishing little streams that are crowded over with branches. Personally I just like fishing longer rods some might say that's too long for a 3wt. because you lose some finesse.

Basically all my rods are 9' except for one 10'. I mostly chironomid fish though so you need to find what suits your needs.

The longer the rod the more control you have-there may be a few conditions where a short rod is a advantage such as a busy area behind you-in this case you should be useing a spey cast method. I am usually fishing from a pontoon boat and I have always favored a longer rod-the longer the better. I used to have a 11ft.3in.#6-Sage till I sat on it. This was the best fly rod that I have ever fished. Just my thoughts.
