Capilano River, July 6th 2012
« on: July 07, 2012, 11:26:21 AM »

Well I finally made it back out since my last report on June 13 and as I arrived to my spot and walked in I saw a fish jump and make a splash. A good sign I said to myself. I soon finished with the routine of setting up, a perfectly round piece of roe on the hook, drag set correctly and with a smile made my first cast. The water was crystal clear and at about the 2 foot level this day unlike the much faster 4 foot I encountered 3 weeks ago.

For 10:30am on a Friday I expected no one to be around but I had forgot that schools out or is it, as I see 2 young fellows fishing higher up the river and 4 more fishermen fishing the beach area a few hundred yards lower. But it was only me, the two seagulls circling above and my lovely fishy friends in the pool where I was at.

For the first hour nothing much was happening, no bites, no jumps and I could see the seagulls were getting grumpy with my fish catching ability. But then, finally a fish jumped as she entered the pool and I had just cast so I carefully steered my floating ship to where I thought she may be. Nope, nothing on that try, quickly reeled up and tried a different spot. Nope, nothing again, come on Al.

I knew I may not have long to dilly dally around as sometimes the coho just shoot right through and are gone before you can loosen a button on your shirt. The seagulls as well, sitting nearby seemed to be cheering me on, well at least one was. The other gave me a look of despair and said to his friend "Forget it, he's useless, we'll have to find lunch elsewhere." Just as that thought entered my brain cells my float shot straight down, Fish On I said !!!!

It didn't seem to be a very big coho but she gave a fiesty fight but I couldn't let the seagulls down and quickly brought her in, a nice 3 lber. The other fishermen in the other pools had clearly seen me triumph in my fishing exploit and their body mannerisms seemed to jump with more energy and electricity, or was it just the adrenaline that coursed through me that made me think that way. At any rate I had lunch for my feathered friends and a nice dinner for me.

I cleaned my silver bounty, tossing a lovely lunch to the two waiting souls who shrieked in their delight and was soon back at my post hoping for coho number 2 but with a renewed sense of optimism perched on my shoulder. I fished and fished and cast and cast and soon the minutes turned into daunting hours, my two flying friends long departed searching for a fisherman that could lift their spirits.

It gives one time to reflect, these quiet serene moments that allow us to see the world in all its beauty away from the crazy world of humans and the laughter of life. Is it no wonder why I love this river so much. Soon I shall bid good bye to my friend and fish the Vedder and the Fraser for the big boy's but it is comforting to know that like a long lost friend, she is always there.

It is very quiet with little action in over 2 hours when with no warning my float shoots downward and I raise my rod in victory. I was quick with my hook set and I know it was solid and as I slowly and carefully play my prey I smile with the knowledge that I will soon be on my way home. It is no easy effort this time as this fish has other idea's about having dinner with me and just as I am about to lift her out of the water she is off and like a ghost, is gone.

Drat, I say to no one in particular and go to check my hook and re-bait. I continue fishing for another hour but it has once again slowed down to a crawl, the sun is hot and as I check my watch I see it is 2 o'clock and if I'm going to beat the Friday rush hour back to New Westminster I had better get my butt moving.

It is with a bit of sadness that I leave as I know this may be my last visit to the Cap till Sept. as the water will only get lower and the springs will be showing elsewhere waiting to be caught. Still and all life is good and I thank my friend for the many memories we've shared again, this year.

Good Fishing All !!!
