Update:

The recent stocking reports for Buntzen Lake indicates that it has been stocked with 5000 rainbows in the past 2 months, with 2000 fish going in on June 14th.  The newly stocked trout will all be the half-pound or 11-12 inch size, which is fairly typical for our Lower Mainland lakes. Keep in mind that there are a lot of larger trout in Buntzen Lake as well. In fact... my biggest trout to date, from Buntzen, measured in at a whopping 18 inches!

Buntzen Lake is an absolutely ideal location and setting for this competition, and given the recent stocking numbers... the fish should be fairly abundant and willing to chase a fly! Beyond the competitive aspect, this event also provides a great format and opportunity to socialize, make new friends and reconnect with old ones.

I hope to see a few more fly fishers signing up for this event, and coming out to support the Youth Team - while enjoying a great time both on and off the water...

Here's an updated list of participants (please post on this thread or email me if you wish to register or can't make it and your name is on the list):

Update:

We're looking for a volunteer(s) to help barbecue and serve the lunch (hamburgers and hot dogs) for the fund-raiser portion of this event. All proceeds from the barbecue go directly to the Youth Team and to help send 17 year-old Jordan Viveiros, of Maple Ridge, to compete as a member of the Youth Team at this year's National Championships in Mont Tremblant, Quebec.

Please contact Todd Oishi at: toishis@uniserve.com for more information or post your replies on this thread.

Thank-you!!

For those who've emailed me and aren't familiar with this style of fly fishing...

The term “loch-style” is used to describe a method of stillwater fishing where the flies are cast, presented, and retrieved ahead of the drift of a boat, as it's blown across the surface of a lake. The boat drifts broadside to the wind, with the fly fisher(s) seated sideways within the boat and with the wind against their back. The drift of the boat is controlled by using a “drogue” (drift sock) that drags in the water behind the boat to slow its drift and keep it traveling in a fairly straight line.

In comparison to fishing from a stationary or anchored boat, loch-style fishing allows the fly fisher to effectively cover a much greater area and number of trout within a similar time-frame. Fishing from a drifting boat provides the added advantage of a stealthy approach that significantly reduces the chance of spooking the trout as the fly is usually the first object that they will see.

While traditional trolling of a fly can be effective in deeper water, it certainly has its limitations for shallow water presentations, as the presentation of the fly is limited to areas where the boat has recently traveled, thereby creating a higher probability that the trout will have seen the boat and fly line long before the fly itself. On busy and heavily-pressured lakes, the forward presentation of loch-style fishing allows the fly fisher to effectively cover the shoreline, small bays and other areas of the lake where trolling a fly would be ineffective and virtually impossible...

For those who have emailed me in regards to the rules and for a definition of loch-style fishing; here's a diagram that I drew that illustrates the competitors' "fishing zones" that they're allowed target while fishing loch-style. The flies, while in the water, must not pass behind the centerline of the boat (absolutely no trolling allowed). Fishing or having your flies in the water while the boat is under power, either from oars or a motor is not permitted.

Both competitors must fish in front of the boat from the same (downwind) side and cast their flies in the water on their half of the boat. See diagram below:

I know from past experiences and very recent reports that there are some rather large trout residing in Buntzen Lake, which should make this a very interesting and entertaining event. They've also stocked Buntzen with over 7000 trout during the past few months, which will be the half-pound or 11-12 inch size, and should prove to be very aggressive and fun to catch!

I'd love to see a few more people signing up for what should prove to be an exceptionally fun and interesting event! I have plenty of drift socks (drogues) and thwart boards for those that are curious about loch-style fly fishing and wanting to come out and enjoy a day on the water and socializing. Please keep in mind that it costs absolutely nothing to enter, so you've got absolutely nothing to lose...

Cheers,
Todd

I just received a last minute cancellation for next Sunday's event (Sunday, July 15th), so we're searching for more fly fishers that have 12 or 14 foot boats that want to fill in and join in on the fun. No previous competition experience is necessary (keep in mind that this is fun event and a great way to meet a few new faces from this forum). The fishing and weather forecast looks good, so please sign up and come out to support the kids.

Thanks,
Todd
