Bitter crab
« on: August 30, 2012, 11:21:52 AM »

So I caught a crab last night cooked it up and it wasn't as tasty as usual. It wasn't sweet but more bitter. It was more orange that brown to begin with too. Also it's the first time I cook a crab fresh and whole. I usually clean it when I catch it and put it on ice... There is a bitter crab disease caused by parasites but it always talks about blue crab getting it on the internet... any ideas? Did I cook it wrong?

Lotsa crap and guts boiled in the same pot?? I always crack the shell gut and split. Best way less mess later on. Also where did you catch the crab? I have been crabbing locally for a long time. Last year we went to the west coast of the island, fresh dungeness...wow what a difference from the crab we catch out of the straight. It tasted so much better, it is hard to describe the difference but it was like night and day.
