Degreasing bearings
« on: November 03, 2012, 11:37:00 PM »

Hey, I'd like to try degreasing the bearings in my islander cp and try running them dry.
The reels 4 years old now and there's nothing wrong with the way it spins now but there's always room for improvement I guess.
So my questions are:
Do I have to take the bearings out or can I just soak the reel in lighter fluid with line off?
To the guys who have done this did you notice a difference in start up?
Just bored and if I can get a couple more horseys for free why not.
Thanks in advance.

Better to take the bearings out as you will need to oil them after getting the grease out.

take the line off the reel get yourself some good brake clean you can do this with bearing in the reel spray brake clean right in bearngs the brake clean will evaporate  this should get the grease and oil out saves you from taking out the bearings and damaging them all dependens if you have sealed bearings or just a regular bearings if they are original they will be regular bearings all can be done without taking the bearings out i dont use grease on bearings just very thin reel oil. all different kinds.just have to service more often but will always spin nice and true. good luck 8)

Im pretty sure the factory bearings on the islander are sealed, as there is no way to take the cover off.
It's time to re line it anyway so I think I'll just blast it while it's spinning and hope for the best.
