More on the Cohen Commision

Read scientific papers thoroughly
Dr. Gary Marty, Campbell River Mirror, November 8, 2012
Re: “Cohen commission report must be acted upon”; by Leona Adams; Opinion, Nov. 6.
Ms. Adams claims that “Provincial and federal government science proves net-pen salmon farms now pose more than a minimal risk of serious harm to the health of migrating Fraser River Sockeye Salmon.”  I disagree.
…Ms. Adams also expressed concern about smolts being exposed to 650 billion infectious particles per hour during an IHN virus outbreak on a fish farm.  That sounds like a lot of virus, but viruses are very small.
It would take about 11,000 years for the infected farm to release enough IHN virus to fill a single sockeye salmon egg…

Perennial naysayers
Grant Warkentin - Campbell River Mirror, November 08, 2012
Re: “Cohen commission report must be acted upon,” “Don’t be duped by story,” Nov. 7, 2012
Perennial aquaculture naysayers Leona Adams and Paul Dean seem to believe that if they repeat myths often enough, people will think they are facts.

Cohen report not an indictment of fish farms
Clare Backman, Times Colonist, November 4, 2012
In contrast to Cohen's cautious but clear message are the responses from those opposed to aquaculture, who spin the report as an indictment of salmon farming

Cohen report doesn’t blame fish farms
Ian Roberts, The Province, November 5, 2012
It’s a shame that some have chosen to misrepresent the recommendations of the Cohen Report, A $26-million study looking at the recent decline of Fraser River sockeye.

News: Fish Farming - “The Mouse in the Room”
CBC Radio, All Points West,  November 2, 2012
Stewart Hawthorn, board member of the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association, says the call for more research on fish farming is valid.

News: Salmon and climate change – “The Elephant in the Room”
CBC Radio, All Points West, November 5, 2012
The Cohen Commission labeled climate change as one of the biggest threats to sockeye salmon. We hear from Ken Denman from the University of Victoria.

News: BC Salmon Farmers Fearless of Cohen Report
By Carmen Weld,  Monday, November 5, 2012 - 3:15 PM
The Discovery Island fish farms generate thousands of jobs for the North Island and the freeze on fish farming recommended by the Cohen report has some worried. But, the BC Salmon Farmers Association’s Board Member Clare Backman says there is nothing to worry about.

News: Judge Cohen’s recipe for change
MARK HUME , VANCOUVER , The Globe and Mail,  Sunday, Nov. 04 2012
In his extended narrative on the uncertain future of Fraser River sockeye, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Cohen lays out a plan to transform the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

News: Editorial: Sockeye salmon report sobering, but definitive
Vancouver Sun editorial November 2, 2012
Bruce Cohen’s commission of inquiry into what he quite rightly calls the uncertain future of Fraser River sockeye salmon is both refreshing and depressing.

The Cohen report, in pictures
Salmon Farm Science, November 2, 2012
Rather than post a long, boring article about what the Cohen report really says versus what people are claiming it says, we decided our readers are smart enough to read it for themselves.
Instead, we have decided to provide a summation in annoying animated gifs.

The Cohen report: how the lawyers reacted
Fish Farm Science, November 6, 2012
We missed something in our last post.
Given that the bulk of the $26 million in tax dollars spent on the Cohen commission went to lawyers (not for salmon farmers, though, who paid their own legal costs), we are sure they had a reaction, too.

Anti-aquaculture protesters are dinosaurs
Salmon Farm Science, November 7, 2012
Anti-aquaculture protesters are rapidly becoming irrelevant.
They are dinosaurs, thundering around trying to scare people with vague talk of risk and potential harm, with very few facts to back them up.

Cohen Commission: A lesson on communicating an agenda
Alaska Salmon Ranching, Posted on November 5, 2012
A previous blogsuggested that a 26 million dollar study into the recent decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon in British Columbia was perhaps heavily influenced by the agenda of numerous environmental groups and individual anti-salmon aquaculture zealots.
It seems as though we were spot on.
A single tweet appeared today, compliments of @ClayoquotKid, which clearly proves there is an orchestrated campaign to sway public opinion about salmon aquaculture in British Columbia.

Some good reading there aqua and it's good to see Dr. Gary Marty is continuing his mission to dispel the misinformation foaming out there.   I appreciate the journalists who are covering this story factually and responsibly.

Nice to see that there were people already available to provide the media an interpretation of the inquiry's recommendations.  We all know that media reports are always accurate...lol.  That's the problem right now.  Many people are not actually reading the report.  Instead they are tuning into media reports and special interest groups to do it for them.  It is not that hard to understand.  Cohen does an very good job in making sure that the report is as easy to understand as possible given the large amount of testimony that he had go through - much of it very technical.  It is very obvious what Cohen said or what he did not say for anyone that read the report.

Cohen report is biblical much like all reports.
They are not meant to be understood, but interpreted.
The most important thing is that taxpayer money was spent and nothing was produced.
I don't have time to read Cohen's report in it's entirety, nor do most people. We read bits of them and sometimes out of context.
This report didn't tell us anything we didn't already know. At least the bits I read.
Complete and utter waste of money.

http://www.campbellrivermirror.com/news/180236701.html

"Marine Harvest, is reminding the public that it has been quietly supporting wild salmon research for two years."

Curious why they have been so quiet about it and now have decided to tell everyone. Do they seriously think that by saying that, the public is going to buy into the fact that they actually care about wild salmon?? Why don't they show us some of their research?

What a hollow, useless bit of propaganda press! Talk about patting yourself on the back.....

Received today.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your recent email calling on the government to implement the recommendations of the Cohen Commission to protect the wild Pacific sockeye salmon.

New Democrats share your concerns and we have called for the Conservative government to immediately implement the 75 recommendations Justice Cohen identifies in his report.

We commend Justice Cohen and his team for their efforts and their commitment to transparency and public engagement.  Over two and half years, the Commission held 10 public forums and 128 days of evidentiary hearings.  They received 2145 exhibits and heard from 179 witnesses. They obtained over a half a million documents from the government, and thousands more from participating groups and members of the public.  This level of consultation is how all public policy should be informed.

Canadians demand and deserve healthy, sustainable and prosperous fisheries to pass along to the next generation and this report should act as a blueprint for the Government and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans to achieve their core mandate to conserve wild fish.

Unfortunately, instead of strengthening habitat protection and environmental oversight, the Conservative government has gutted the Fisheries Act,  the Navigable Waters Protection Act, weakened the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, cut funding for science and research, and continue to ignore the threats of climate change.
It's clear the Conservatives are moving away from ecosystem management and habitat protection, which ensures healthy, robust ecosystems and allows for the recovery of species, to only protecting the fish with so-called "commercial, recreational or aboriginal value". These changes fly in the face of scientific conservation efforts.
My colleagues and I will continue to stand up for our fisheries and demand that this Government act on the recommendations of the Cohen Commission and not just shelve this valuable report.

You can help us send this message to Stephen Harper and his Conservatives by signing our petition at http://www.ndp.ca/protect-our-fisheries

Or learn more about the proposed changes to the Fisheries Act at:
