Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can speak to the differences in feel/ease of transport between a 2 pc and 3pc rod. The two blanks I'm looking at are 13 and 13.5 feet in length.

Most of my fly rods are 4 pcs rods. It is easier to pack around when on the move hiking into lakes or along rivers. I strap it to my backpack and off I go. The downside is you have to line up more eyes when putting all the pieces together and I guess with more connections there is an increased possibility of things going wrong.  Although  I have never had a problem with any of mine.

I'd definitely get the 4 piece if I had a choice.

A 13-13.5 two piece rod would leave you with two pieces close to 7 feet long, so obviously transporting will be awkward.  I would go with the 4 piece, or at least the three piece which would leave you with 4.5 foot lengths.

How about action, do the extra joint pieces affect the feel?

3 peice is a pain when hiking or moving instead of breaking down in 2 peices to carry you have to break it down to 3, i have the clarus 13 foot 4 piece love the action and feel of it and love the fact that i can break it down to 2 peices to carry and move or 4 peices to strap onto the side of my bag.

Hmm. I was wondering about ease of breaking down the 3 piece-good to know. In that case, if it was up to you, would you guys rather go with a 12 foot 2 piece, or a 3 piece 13.5 foot?

Basically I'm wondering if an extra foot and a half of line control is worth the hassle of having a 3 piece rod.

I've read that fewer pieces makes for better performance (apparently, ideally, you want a 1 pc rod), but obviously more pieces makes transport easier.

That being said, when I was buying my most recent fly rod the salesman told me that more pieces = better performance :s :s

may have been true many years ago but most mutli-piece rods are designed as such and give up little if anything to 2 piece rods.

For me, a big NO NO to 3 piece rods, maybe transport would be OK but when you want to break the rod down to bush whack a 9' and a 4.5' would be difficult to work. 4 piece all the way,you can hide them in your car aswell so they can't be seen..

All but 1 of my fly rods are 4pc rods. I would never want a 3pc and yes I know lots of good companies make them but I think a 3pc design is stupid. The 2pc rods I have are 1 fly rod, and all my gear rods. I wouldn't want a 3 or 4 pc gear rod just for ease of use, it is nice to break your rod in half to change spots. With my 4pc fly rods I still also just pop them in half to change spots however I do put my spey rods completely away back into their rod tubes at the end of each trip so I don't risk breaking them. With my single handers again they get taken apart in half but put away into a rod tube that holds them with the line strung ready to rock on the next trip..............I want a couple rod tubes like that for spey rods
