Up till last year I always used fixed.  However I got such a good deal on an 11 1/2 foot convergence that I bought it even though it had slip rings.  Was I ever surprised at how well they worked and the freedom to move the real around the butt to best meet the fishing conditions.  I would not get rid of my fixed rods but would certainly look at the split rings again.

I use a GLoomis GLX from time to time and although the sliding rings seem to grip the reel well, I would not trust the rings alone without securing them with tape.  I value my pins and would hate a freak chance that an accident were to happen due to a ring loosening. Other than that I don't mind the feel and option to position reel anywhere on the handle.

For myself, I don't keep the reel on the rod after fishing trips so for the day I just use hockey tape but do not tape directly on the cork.

Love the slip rings. However, before I used tape, my islander hit the dike rock and took a swim in 6' of water. Make sure to tape it up!
