Loosening the drag on the reel
« on: September 18, 2013, 10:44:26 PM »

Just a reminder...

With all the salmon fishing going on right now, does anyone here still follow the procedure of loosening the drag on the reel when it's not in use? It's a great way to prolong the life of those drag washers!

I do. I will adjust it every time, this will make your reel last longer.

Everytime I get home from a day out. Air dry all the gear, rinse if needed, and loosen off the drags.

Ev........ry.......day. Even the tension on my Center pin. After a while you get to know the drags so you can dial in your drag easy. It takes little time, and keeps things consistent over time.

yes loosen the drag, but how many of you rinse off your spool and bail when fishing the chuck? saltwater is more devastating then a tightened drag itself!

Loosening the drag is something we should all do but often forget.
Re-tightening the drag the next time out is something we should do but ALSO forget.
And, we end up getting a sore thumb from trying to stop a hot running spring ("Oh-My-God!!" followed by "we know what" LOL!)

re-tighten before you go out, helps keep the rain out on some reels

Also loosen the drag a bit when landing a fish. Seen too many guys tightening up their drag when they bring the fish to shore only to have the fish take one more run and snap the line.

I never used to do this but I asked Shimano directly and they said that it should be done that it can push the grease out of the washers and make the drag sticky.
