sturgeon questions
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:07:13 PM »

For those of you willing to respond:
if a pikeminnow or something similar is hounding the bait, is the spot not going to produce sturgeon or is it possible if the sturgeon come round, the small fellows will leave?

If I am being hounded by pike minnows I will usually re-cast to a different spot (sometimes even 10ft makes a difference), or I will move to another location. If I am fishing from shore and don't have the luxury of moving much I often try another bait. Pikeminnow love roe and can pick a hook clean pretty quickly.
I find if pikeminnow are there and biting the sturgeon are not there. However when the bite stops, sometimes it is due to a sturgeon coming into the area and I have had those days where all of a sudden you have a sturgeon hammering your line. It stands to reason that the pikeminnow would scatter when a sturgeon comes by, after all they are a natural food source of sturgeon.
