Might as well end off the summer fishery with a nice report. Wow what a year, best salmon year on this river in the last 5 years for me. Beautiful weather, great people, pretty fish and an amazing view from every corner.
With all the rain Saturday we decided to make one more run to the river on Sunday for the chinook fishery. Left the house at 3 am arrived by 6:30. My father and my friend were a little slow to get down the ropes and the rocks to the run. By the time they were down and walking to the pool, I bonked a nice red jack on the first cast, was on the retrieve to boot. Next 3 hours left me with fish almost every cast, to a point where I put down the gear rod and started with the switch rod. But the number of pinks in the river this year really is crazy. Every second the entire day they were shooting up the rapids and you could see the water chalk full of them! 3 straight pinks on a big intruder surprisingly so I went back to the gear. Blades got me one jack and 3 pinks in about 20 min, and jigs just got me a few pinks. Bait of choice was a chunk of roe or prawn with chartreuse wool. Hooked over 20 jacks, 3 adults, one sockeye on a prawn, 3 bows, about a dozen pinks and to make it an even better day, 3 coho. Only landed one hoe as the other two were among my biggest hooked and popped off, the one I did land was released very quick and never left the water. All jacks bonked were the fattest ones of the year and were all just under the slot limit.
What a year with peace instead of the usual shoulder to shoulder. Also found another run to check out for next year which is nice, just gonna be a pain to get down to.
