Anyone seen this smoker?
« on: September 28, 2013, 11:08:45 AM »

Hey,
I'm looking for a low budget meat/fish smoker.
I saw this clip with something that would be perfect for myself but can't find it anywhere local (a&n, can tire, walmart, etc).

The answer is in the video, actually.

Its from JarvisWalker, seems to be an aussie fishing company.

If you don't want to make your own with $2 worth of bits from the thrift shop, check out commercial food equipment suppliers.  Some restaurant kitchens use small stovetop smokers like that to do individual portions.

I've considered making one but tools get pricey and I don't want my porch to burn down.

Food suppliers would be a good place to start.

What tools would you need? Im thinking some sheet metal shears, a drill, a riveter, and two pairs of vice grips to put bends in the metal. Could use a welder instead of drill/riveter too. One of these days Im going to attempt to build my own smoker, I've seen some nice ones made out of old fridges - I was planning to use a bar fridge or a small deep freeze for it.

If you're going to use an alcohol stove like in the video, or even sterno cans all you need is a steel roaster and a rack and a few bricks.  Is aluminum ok for that?  I'm not sure and sometimes those are more available at Value Village.  I have a copy of a Brinkman's, (a Mr. Meat) with an electric element and the liquid pan but I want to wire in a dimmer switch so I can cold smoke as well.  I didn't take it to BC this summer (should have), but put apple wood in foil packets, poked some holes and set them in the bottom of the table top bbq.  Ribs go on when it's smoking. Don't soak the wood or it takes too long, unlike in a real smoker.
