Numerous reports have appeared recently that suggest the Vedder/Chilliwack river is increasingly contaminated with DHMO or dihydrogen monoxide.

Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.


Due to the enormous number of fisherman on the river we advise that you  stay home this weekend so the DHMO can be tested in a safe and comprehensive manner.

DHMO is only present on weekends BTW, due to a variety of human induced factors... so you still have tomorrow and Friday to haul in some coho salmon...

DHMO is a nasty compound. A few months ago, during mid summer, I was waking the Rotary Trail and got quite thirsty. I had some gulps of river water and within an hour or two I had to urinate pretty bad. The colour of my urine made my think that DHMO is the culprit.

I have read, though,that in large doses, DHMO cause breathing difficulties in humans, leading to loss of consciousness, even death.

Think I'll make plans to fish elsewhere this weekend.

I think I am immune to it already after fishing the Vedder for 25 years.

Its like getting the flu shot.....
