Tidal Fraser River, October 23rd 2013
« on: October 23, 2013, 07:33:47 PM »

headed out 8:00 morning for the incoming tide. location was between no6 rd and river road north arm. bar fished with pink roe and chum roe. only 3 strikes from 9:00 to 1:30. 2 sculpins and 1 bull trout about 3lbs. wondered where all the fish went. then a commercial net boat went by. Damn....no wonder its so dead out here. Need to check for openings next time i go out on the fraser. Hope you guys had better luck.

I went after work and I arrived around 4:45 pm. I did spot surfacing fish, but it did not strike my lures after a hour of fishing. No other fishermen caught anything too. Water clarity was greyish/dark green, so visibility wasn't the best and the added glare from the sun did not help the fishing conditions.

There are still plenty of fish coming into the river, just not on our lines! We fished briefly this afternoon from 4:00pm to 5:30pm by taking turns while one of us took care of the little guy. Nina managed to miss one but we watched a couple who we've fished with before hooking 8 fish during that period. Only two were landed as I was able to net those for them while the other ones all came off due to bad drag (or no drag) on their reels. All coho landed were wild and released. Visibility is excellent in my opinion so it was not surprised to see all fish were hooked by casting and retrieving 1/4 and 3/8oz Gibbs Croc and Koho spoons.

Definetily some boats out today and fishing in front of Deas Island seemed like vis went down hill around there too from last week, perhaps because of the bigger tides. Damn commercial guys!

Langley area Fraser has been consistent since late last week when the water cleared up. Only opportunity is to fish a couple hrs late day to dark but everyday between two of us, we are getting results. Most days we are in the 2-3 hook ups with coho but not bad considering just standing out on a beach throwing into big water. Surface is active but mostly high percentage of chum would be the expected culprits.
Roe is only getting jacks as I alternate with bait and lures for the short time in evening. Monday was best day for fun with 5 jacks and one 6-7 lb. Tonight my friend landed a good one in the 8-9 lb range.
The fog has broke the last two days so been just beautiful evenings in peace tossing a line while watching the sun go down over the Golden Ears bridge.   ;)
However, it has been over a week since any of us has hooked a hatchery fish. Nonetheless, it's great to have the action. Given this is just one small area and fished a couple hrs a day, it's a testament to how many fish are still traversing thru the Fraser.

That's a good overview of the last couple of weeks, thanks. ;) I was somewhat skeptical about returning to fish the South side of the Fraser River as most of the fish coming in (I'm assuming) are heading to the tributaries on the north side of the Fraser River. The amount of fish I saw today kind of put that theory to rest. I know you and I have talked about that some of these fish are heading into the sloughs and creeks, but I have to believe a lot of these fish must be on their way to the Chilliwack River (unless they make a cross river dash to the other side as they head upstream). My past diary entries have always shown that fresh coho salmon being caught from the Lower Chilliwack/Vedder River in the first and second week of November, so we should still see some fish coming through. It has been a pretty incredible season so far and great to see Southern BC's coho salmon stocks doing much better than a decade ago. Hopefully another big push will come through tomorrow afternoon. :D

Why afternoon is better than morning, Rodney? The high tide is 12:30PM and afternoon tide is lower and not much difference in high & low. Is the outgoing tide better for some spots?

I stopped and checked out the area between the intersection onto River Rd. and the train bridge at approx. 2pm today.  Saw two decent size salmon roll on the surface when I got there then nothing.  I threw some crocs, colorado blades, and a purple jig and didn't get a bite.  Wasn't expecting much since it was low tide.  I'll definitely try again another day at high tide.

I've been skeptical of fishing the south side as it seems that the Commercial guys usually stay out of the shipping lanes (on the north side) and fish the south.

BTW seems like there are WAAAAAAAY more commercial guys out this year than last year, but last year had a bigger chum run.  Rodney I figured your sway at the DFO would keep them away from your favourite place to fish:)  It is kind of disturbing the number of commercial boats out though. What's the deal?

I went back to the same spot today about two hours before high tide.  I saw some fish surfacing within a few minutes of setting up.  There was a pair of seals on the opposite side of the river chasing fish.

I started out with some crocs and didn't get any response.  I switched to a green holographic spinning minnow and on the third cast a huge bull trout followed my lure into the rocks.  He was swimming parallel to the lure and at first I thought he was foul hooked.  He took off when the lure got to about three feet from shore.  I continued casting the spinning minnow but no bites.

I switched to a chartreuse and orange gator that I had modded with eyes and sparkles down the middle.  The first cast brought another big bull trout about seven feet from shore.  He got close to the surface and did a quick 180 degree turn.

Nothing else was interested and I didn't see a lot of fish surfacing once high tide hit.  I tried every combo of crocs, gators, and similar lures.  I might try again soon  but about 100 feet up the river from where I was today.
