Fraser river boat launches
« on: February 25, 2014, 03:24:38 PM »

Hi Everyone,

I am a UBC student conducting some research for Metro Vancouver on the demand for and use of boat ramps along the Fraser River.

Metro Vancouver wants to assess whether or not demand for these facilities is being met, and how they can improve access for boaters in the region.

A large portion of my study involves surveys and I am trying to reach as many people and as many different groups as possible.

If you have any experience using boat ramps on the Fraser River please take my short survey below and share it with any friends.

Also if you have any suggestions for my project please share!

Thanks.

Are they truly interested? The apathy by provincial and municipal governments towards sport fishing needs is astounding. The Fraser River is a thousand miles long and you can count on one hand all the proper boat launch sites. Don't even get me started on lack of access to other rivers in the province. Our various Provincial and Federal Parks branches have even cut off many of the access points that we used to have. Go to the relatively uninhabited potato state of Idaho and they have better facilities than our whole province.

I cannot comment on either the Provincial or Federal government. However in doing this research it is clear that there is very limited information available on this subject so lack of awareness might contribute to this. Hopefully the little work I am able to do for this project will be a good starting point for further research on the subject.

Welcome to the forum David. Just out of curiosity, did you see a spike in the number of survey participation after posting this yesterday? We've also made it available on our Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/fishingwithrod/posts/10153857047530483?stream_ref=10

Later on this week, I will have the link available in our Lower Mainland fishing report section, so you should see more participation in the future.

I also recommend you post it on flybc.ca

Will you be posting a summary of your survey results once it becomes available later on? I'm sure participants are interested to find out which boat launches seem to get more usage than others.

Good luck.

Thanks to one of the members here it was also linked on Flybc.ca.
Great idea. Hope it gets a decent response.

Might want to change the spelling of the Putello bridge though:)

Sorry for the late reply. I have have received more responses than I could have hoped for so I am extremely pleased with the feedback so far. My final report will be available online, and if there is interest I can post more details on the survey results themselves in April or May once I've finished the project and have organized and analyzed the data.

One limitation that I am trying to overcome at the moment is that 99% of the survey respondents have been men. It is not surprising, however I would ideally like to have a more balanced gender response. Also we are trying to reach a variety of users so if anyone has suggestions on how I can reach other user groups, the advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for everyone's input!

This sounds to me like any other government idea. Just a waste of time, paper and of coarse ink. We used to have many good places to put a boat into the Fraser River and then you could run your boat to where ever you wanted and now often there is a gate to block access. Does it matter who put the gate up? I think not. If the gates were against our Government rules, why do they not simply remove them?

The major activity on the river is sturgeon fishing with salmon fishing later in the year.

There is some general rec boating, some kayaking but they probably launch anywhere convenient, the odd jet skier, not so much water skiing (some by the tunnel).

You picked a good site to post on - maybe one other.
If you are looking for more women, you might try kayak clubs.

Not that women don't fish but that the men always launch.
