Boat trailer hub & bearing
« on: June 01, 2014, 10:31:06 PM »

Question ;
When do you replace your hub with bearings for a 2001 boat trailer .
I have always kept up with greasing my bearing buddies every year . I have taken them off ,cleaned them of all dirty grease and repacked them with fresh grease . I am finding that my tire rims on the inside are getting worse with grease coating up . I end up pulling the rims off a few times to clean them before heading out on a trip .

If your towing down the hwy & putting KMs plus launching a lot. ( submerged in water. ) I'd do every 1 -2 yrs.
Like having that safe feeling.

There's a place in Richmond at #5 Rd & Vulcan Way ( just north of Bridgeport Rd. ) that replaces bearings & grease etc.
$140 or somewhere in that area of cost.
Good people & they get a lot of business.

New bearings are $15 at princess auto per side. I change mine every year even if they still look good. At that price you can't go wrong. I even carry a spare set in the boat just in case. Or for helping out someone on the side of the Hwy. Make sure to check the bearing race in the hub for any signs of wear. $50 in maintenance will save you a big tow bill and a ruined trip.

Thanks A-BOATER , I know Princess Auto sells the complete hub and bearing set . I just wanted to find out weather or not mine were on there way out . Seems when I pump them up with new grease , it seeps out the inner hub creating a big mess . I don't like polluting the water  .

There is also a seal on the inside (probably outside too) that needs to be replaced regularly.

That's what's causing the grease to line your rim.

Sounds like your inside seals are gone.
Just did my buddies seals and costed $1.77 for both.
Check bearing and races for wear or burnt discolouration.
Clean and repack bearings with quality grease if they look good and reinstall with new rear seals.
Will solve the grease problem on inside of rim.
Thoroughly clean all parts with solvent to remove old grease which is probably a grey white by now.
Good luck
