Chilliwack River, March 18th 2014
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:33:25 PM »

This year has been the worse I have seen in many years of fishing this system. I had been out 20 plus days without even a take down. Although I have not fished as hard and long as I used to I should have found at least a couple in these trips.

I thought this would be a year I would be skunked and could only count the one from the Thompson from October.

An hour this morning saw nothing so after lunch I moved to another part of the river.

This moved provided successful as I landed a small wild doe, a silver bullet, fresh run, this was after I had lost one and missed a couple of others all on roe bags.

I now had my confidence back and was glad to got rid of a possible blanked season on the Vedder River.

I move to another run and on the first cast I am into another, a smallest fish but takes me down stream a bit before I lose it as I am drawing it close to shore, a wild doe, fresh as the previous.

Another run I had fished earlier proves to be fish number 4 of the day but it also gains its freedom after being on for a few seconds, did not look large, a typical March fish.

I fish to close to dark with no more chances but was satisfied with what the afternoon had provided and I can now join the ranks of others that have landed a steelhead in 2014, maybe more will follow before the year ends, at least one can hope so.

The steelhead this year have been incredibly annoying on my end. Most days I'm struggling for 1 or 2 fish/day, even at ideal water levels and clarity. Whats puzzling is I have had a couple 9-12 fish days, always during low water after a good rain event. It seems (in my eyes) that the steelhead numbers aren't actually bad this year. It appears that during times when they have a chance to move, they move fast with blinders on as far as they can. I seem to hammer on them this year as soon as the water finally gets too low for them to navigate and they have to stop.

This seems to be reinforced by what others I know have told me. One day on the stamp under normally ideal fish hitting conditions a few people I know watched 300+ fish cruise by right past them. They didnt hit a fish that day. Another day someone I know was at the backside of the falls pool and saw the same thing, schools of 20 or more fish cruise by right up onto the falls canyon. A few other island rivers I visit that have closures in upper sections have a bunch of fish sitting in most runs in plain view.

It'll definitely be interesting when Dave does counts on the Vedder this year to see how it compares to previous years. I dont think it will be significantly different.

Yeah, really looking forward to this spring's enumerations, beginning early April.  Perhaps the remaining wild fish have adapted to angling pressure and have learned to stop biting ... :D

I was fishing a river yesterday and was crossing a channel to get to the main river. After walking along the channel, I noticed a fish sitting in it, then another beside it. After a few minutes of looking I counted a group of 16, they were just really hard to spot until they would move. Within minutes they moved up and on my way back down an hour later, there was a few more fish that were slightly coloured sitting. I noticed them move shortly after. So it looks like they are just shooting through with this higher water, really reluctant to bite.

Good to hear you had a great day Chris.
Anytime you can get into that many hookups are the days we dream about.
I haven't made a cast yet this season and wondering if ill get out in time or not.
Has been some great conditions for the fish this year so lets hope they have a banner year for spawning etc.
