Do Steelhead hang with Cutty's?
« on: March 20, 2014, 05:31:55 PM »

Hello All,

I have been having a fair amount of success this year on the local river catching cutty's, but have came up with a big old goose egg so far for steelhead.

So my question is, do steelhead hold in the same types of spots as cutty's do?  I am doing something right fishing wise, but perhaps not steelhead wise?

Thanks and info appreciated!

In my experience you'll often catch them in the same spots. Just aren't many steelies around this year

Same area, for sure.If you see cutties in the tailout or fringe and not all over, its because there is a steelie or two in the deep.

That is probably the case. Steelhead won't hang out with cutthroat, but cutthroat will hang around spawning steelhead. As a general rule, rainbows and cutthroat don't buddy up. They are natural adversaries. In cases where they've cross bred it usually a situation where one or the other is from hatchery stock.

Often observe cutties in behind summers. Even saw a rather large pod of cuts behind a pair of steelhead not too long ago.

cutthroat prefer slower water than rainbow. Smaller fish often won't hang too close to large fish for obvious reasons but they don't have to be too far apart even a few yards is enough in most cases. Most of the steelhead streams I fish don't have too many cutthroat particularly in winter. In spring cutts will move into the lower sections of streams.
