And you wonder why I have been so critical of Canada's DFO since the 1970s, when it became obvious to anyone with a brain that we were destroying the environment. We can say exactly the same thing about logging in our province. Vancouver Island is a perfect example of outright greed and corruption. The huge forests of mature trees no longer exist except in a few tiny parks. We are now harvesting trees long before they even get close to maturity. A few of us were questioning our superiors but we would have lost our jobs had we gone to the press. I've kept diaries for over 50 years documenting what went on. I was there when it was happening.

Massive trawling & netting should be banned. Every fishing boat should only use long lines or set lines. That way they don't kill more than their quota and won't kill the wrong species. While all fingers from the industrialized worlds are pointed to the subsistence fishermen doing shark fishing, what about these brutal way of fishing with massive boats and the wastes of dumping those precious fish of the sea?

Liketofish I totally agree. There should be a total ban on all net fishing .

For fragile stocks I agree. And, there is no question that the grey cod is endangered. At least that way a responsible fisherman can release the undersize fish alive. I've always said that trawl fisheries are a abhorrent destruction of habitat and unwanted species.

EU fishery rules demand "tons & tons" of dead cod be dumped back into the sea because the huge nets had too many.
Plus a very large amount dumped because of being under sized ( dead cod again )
& the dead dumped fish do not go into the stats. :o

Polish fishermen having a lottery to fish or not & these tons of fish being dumped as the show revealed.
Have they heard of food banks & surely they did not hear of the poor ex fisherman old guy cleaning nets & doing odd dock jobs to be paid with a fish. Living in a old shack, & found dead.
Fell & froze to death.

Very very odd, crazy & scary. On a course of non stop depletion of the stocks.
Better if a lot of smaller boats go out with their smaller nets.
More fishermen get jobs & when the limit is met there is near zero dumping.

The huge ships & nets = " oh we need 1 more ton of cod to complete our quotation so lower the net. Net comes up with 4 tons; no problem just throw 3 tons of dead cod overboard"

Can the over limit & ship it to World Vision.
Remember the earthquake & then a hurricane shortly afterwords in the Philippines plus world hunger & disasters are happening on a regular basis.

The dumping of fish. Waste.
Over fishing & not having accurate info is fooling with nature " big time " & they are blind to what happened in Canada's east coast fishery.
Plus so many little boats forced to stay dry docked & allowing the big ships to take over.
Sums it up.
At least Norway has sense & said that "dumping is craziness" & keeps the fish, over limit or not. :)
