Hornby and Thormanby islands
« on: July 30, 2014, 10:32:34 AM »

Heading up there on a boat trip with some friends for a week and wondering if there's any sort of fishing opportunities in the area?

Used to be good coho fishing there off Chrome Island and off the eastern tip of Hornby but as most know the inside gulf coho fishery isn't 10% of what it was 30 years ago. I'd guess there's be Chinook opportunities in the same location and up in the channel between the 2 Islands. Late summer run Chinook can be excellent in the area as I recall one summer in the week before Labour day I was in a cabin at the mouth of the Oyster to fish pink and cutthroat and the party in the cabin next door took a limit each of white springs at Bates Beach. Both Qualicum Rivers are just south of Hornby/Denmanand springs start trickling into the rivers about now.

Hornby and Thornamby islands are on opposite sides of the Strait with a lot of territory in between.  Is your question geography correct?  Hornby and Denman Islands are together just south of Comox.  There are good opportunities around the rocks and reefs south of Hornby but local knowledge is required.  Watch the regulations as there are closed zones.

Chinook can be trolled SE of Hornby just east of the rocks.

North and south ends of Lasqueti used to have good fishing in amongst the reefs and rocks.

Reefs north of Thornamby used to be good for coho.
