Chilliwack River, November 21st 2014
« on: November 21, 2014, 04:54:11 PM »

Had a rather unexpected day on the C/V today.

I have never fished this late for salmon on the C/V, and I wasn't expecting a big day, but I wanted to give some favourite water one last kick, and also connect with an ailing buddy who I hadn't seen for a few weeks.

Given the clear water, I started off with twitching a darker coloured twister tail grub. That failed to generate any interest so I thought "What the heck" and strapped on a chartruese grub. The bright florescent green seemed a little out of place in the very clear water...good choice though. In the next few hours I hooked 7, landed 2, including this brute northern with the Jimmy Durante beak. On the river I estimated him at 10#. Dressed, at home on a digital scale, he was 8.3#, so 10 was pretty darn close. My biggest coho to date. Even my buddy, whose hours on the river are limitted these days and arrived quite a bit after me, got into a couple.

Interesting the symmetrical orange marks on his belly. Also on his opposite side. Net marks, I presume...

A very unexpected day with excellent numbers of late season fish, a learning moment with jig colours, and my biggest coho to date.

Could be talons. I've seen that pattern on many coho.

Nice fish and I'd guess 10lbs easy. I got one of 10 to 12lb on a north shore river thursday. I hooked 5 and landed 3. The last one was a hatch doe,  23 inches and 4.3lbs. All three fish were sea bright and the fish I killed did not darken much afterward. Tasted great last night. Looks like the run is holding well past mid-Nov this year judging by may results and the reports I have here seen for V-C.

FWIW much of Dewdney & Suicide Creek along #7 was all but empty of anglers. I stopped by the bridge and some were taking chum on floated jigs but I saw no sign of coho so I moved eastward.
