Targeting sea-run coastal cutthroats in the ocean
« on: January 11, 2015, 04:09:28 PM »

Just wondering what types of lures are most effective for targeting coastal cutthroat trout in the ocean? Am interested in trying something new later this winter. I will be doing mostly beach fishing..already have a few ideas for locations, just unsure as to what specific terminal tackle to use. Thanks.  :)

Small spoons and spinners. Or minnow patterns. Fish around creek/river mouths. Cover water. Look for surface action.

Covering water is almost always more important then lure/fly choice look for fish rising or for baitfish swimming around cutthroats like beaches with less sand and more pebbles/rocks and if you see a lot of sea birds in one area try to fish near there because they are most likely feeding on baitfish. And always remember they are hard fish to come by and you have to move around A LOT and some beaches have absolutely no fish but others will be a fish every cast.

Good luck

I have posted alot over the years about fishing with spoons for SRC off the beaches. Do a search for my handle and the word "cutthroat" and you'll get a whack of hits.

Feel free to email me if you want to chat further. Cheers.

Thanks..will check your posts out..I may email you later about lures and such. I will be using spoons and spinners so anything that may help with lure selection would be useful..

I'm anticipating plenty of frustration going into this but at the same time am looking forward to the thrill of hooking into my first sea run cuttie!

I don't do a lot of fishing off the beaches here, but when I am on the island I always pick up lots of cutties using this lure in smaller sizes.

*Update*
After 3 trips of getting skunked, I finally had my first successful SRC fishing trip this afternoon! Was fishing for a couple of hours with a Gibbs Gypsy trolling spoon on an incoming tide. Waders made a difference for sure. Hooked and landed (and released) 3 fish in the 10-16" range and had one 20-24" specimen follow my lure right up to my feet before it took off!  :o  Definitely will want to head out again soon...

Well done. Now you've done it! :)

I remember taking photos of my early SRC catches posed on the beach as well, but now I keep them in the water as long as possible with my soft mesh net and only take them out for a quick measurement against my rod.

I know catching your first SRCs is a special moment and one that you want to record and share with others, but please do take care with the fish. They may be resilient, but it's hard on them to be posed for a picture lying on a gravel beach.

Again, congratulations.

Thanks for the tips, clarki. Now I have to see whether I can get a Fish Porn-worthy photo of a good sized cuttie.. ;D

Well I do take the odd picture of the fish out of water. I have a soft knotless net & try to craddle them in that.. But best to leave them in at least a skim of water and preferably an inch or 2 so they get water on their gills. Most important get them on their way asap. No more than mere seconds between landing, photo & release.

Nice work! Im visiting relatives on the east coast of the island and have found a few little beaches that hold cutts from time to time.

Surprisingly enough have heard reports of the occasional steelie hooked off the beach too.

Always need to remember to wash the gear off after fishing the salt.

Was out again early this morning during the incoming tide. Plenty of risers and baitfish around. Hooked onto a nice 16-18 incher, played it to shore and was just about to land it when it suddenly ran and broke loose..had 2 more (missed) hits and 1 follower and that was it for the day. Also foul hooked a tiny starry flounder by the tail, which I then released.

Back in the day, I used to see them (Searun Cuthtroat) jump all around the crescent beach area when I used to hang out there checking out the girls...
