Powerbait problem

Hello.

I took my kids fishing to a local stocked lake yesterday and rigged up a bottom rig with a sliding wait and using powerbait, the idea being that the powerbait would make the hook float up from the bottom, the approximate length of the leader.  I have done this many times and had great success.  Yesterday I noticed that the powerbait, after being in the water for only a few minutes would sink to the bottom.  Anyone have ideas as to why this was happening.  Just a bad batch?  Could this have been because I was using a fluorocarbon leader?  The leader is the only thing different from what I would usually do.

bait could be getting old and or the hook could be to heavy i don't think the floro would sink it that much

I noticed the same thing yesterday, and my bait wasn't very old.  I was using a very tiny piece of bait, so maybe it wasn't enough to buoy up the hook?  Or could temperature actually affect the buoyancy of powerbait?

Well, I had the chance to get out again and do little fishing.  I usually buy the preformed trout nuggets and they have always been enough to float small hooks, until now.  Two different bottles and it seems that now it takes 2 nuggets to float the same size hooks I have always used.  Maybe a change in formula or size of the nugget?  Just thought I would update this post.

I think you already mentioned most of these, however:

Make sure the Powerbait says it has the floating formula.  They do sell some that do not float.  Also, make sure it is fresh, don't use Powerbait in the fall that is left over from the Spring.  Make sure you are using small, trout hooks.  I also use a small, floating worm with my Powerbait to give it that extra float, action and scent.

get a syringe and pump the worm up with air. Works great if you want to float the worm off the bottom.
