Tunkwa Lake, August 5th - 7th 2015
« on: August 08, 2015, 05:48:07 PM »

We spent a couple of nights at Tunkwa Lake Resort and it was fantastic. The kids had a wonderful time, being able to play around the resort, try out the new kayaks, and even catching some fish. The fishing was excellent, on Thursday from 10:00am to sunset, the bite never stopped. The bomber hatch was strong so the fish were actively feeding in 12 to 15 feet of water. Every boat was getting into fish, which were averaging between 16 and 18 inches long, some were 19" and the odd 20" ones were being brought in too. We fly fished with the indicator, while the kids used a slip float on the spinning rod. If you have some free time in the next two weeks, you should head up there and try this out before the fishing dies off. Here are some photos. I took over 600 so still sorting through most of them and will post more later.

Good to hear. I'll be up that area for the next few days looking for lakes with deactivated roads and big fish. Will either post a picture of a fish or my truck stuck.

Did you try Leighton at all?  How is that lake doing?  Seems quieter there this year compared to previous years.

We didn't try Leighton, just didn't have time during our stay but others who fished it said it was good.

Here are all the pics and my write-up about the trip.

Hey Rod!  You're fishing close to my favorite spot on that lake!!!  LOL.  Beautiful scenery!  Btw - no, not a 3 pounder...sorry.  But here's a shot of something closer to a 3 pounder caught somewhere that vicinity earlier in June:

I'm not actually sure of the fish's weight, but a guy nearby thought it was 3 lbs.  The fish measured close to 20 inches.  Is that about the size of the ones you managed to get into???   :D

We only got into a couple of 19 inchers, I don't think we got any 20s, but most of the other boats which stayed out there all day did.

Here's one of the fish weighed in at the resort, 19 inches, 3lb.

I haven't fished Leighton since 2007. When I first started doing this that was the first lake I tried and I loved it, then I tried another lake and loved that one too, then another one, then another one... Now there are too many options every season and still want to try new lakes too. ;D

Ah, 19 inches - 3 pounds.  Nice fish!  Thanks - I've never weighed them, but can use that info as a benchmark or reference point.

Leighton is a great lake, but as I've mentioned before there is more "dark" fish in there, particularly in early June.  Last year I hooked but lost a fish in Leighton that was probably pushing 5 pounds (I know this only because I lost it  ;D).  I find Leighton is a good option when Tunkwa is not producing.  It's easy just to pick up the float tube and carry it over to the other lake if you park in the provincial campground area.

Btw - I see that the 3 pounder was retained - how did it taste?  I hear that the fish at Tunkwa get a particularly "muddy" taste in the summer.

Thanks for the nice write up.  Looks like a nice time for you and Joedy on the boat there.  I'll rent a boat next time I'm there. Here's 1 I landed from shore in June.  18" and 2.5 lbs.  Fishing from shore, Tunkwa was better for me than Leighton this year.  In the previous few years, it was the other way around.  I also landed a 19", 3lber from the dock at Edith.
