Looking to replace the anchor rope on our river boat. Just wondering if anyone has some words of advice.

Our boat came with I believe 100 feet of anchor rope. I was told by a few people that it was good enough to get by with last summer/fall when we bought the boat, but it was on the skinny side for the size of our boat and being used in the Fraser. I haven't measured the thickness of our current rope but I doubt it is 1/2 inch, maybe 3/8.

I saw a spool at Cascade last time I was in there, I think it was 100 feet for maybe 100 bucks? It was much thicker than what we have on now. Is there a particular thickness that is recommended?

Would ya'll consider 100 feet adequate? I bought the gear over the winter to sturgeon fish and plan to do this in addition to salmon. I have heard for sturgeon 100 feet of rope is a little short as a general rule.

Other information. Boat is 16 foot Harbercraft Falcon. Proper Fraser anchor I believe 30lb. Also running 15 feet of 5/8 chain.

I have 1/2 inch rope but seldom get any 100 footers.
If you want to tie a knot and join a couple together you could have 120 ft for about $60.00
I do get the odd one that is around 100 but nothing right now.

Thanks firstlight, no problem. Is there a brand + diameter you would recommend from a marine shop?

Also can anyone comment if 100 feet is a bit short for sturgeon fishing?

Also, after doing a bit more research a few other sites have recommended using "double-braid" rope instead of "twist" rope. Apparently the double braid is easier on the hands. I usually wear work gloves (ones with the blue rubber) for extra grip when doing anything with the anchor or rope.

I'll have to measure what we have on our boat now before I go buy new rope as I would like to try and go thicker. I find the current rope diameter a bit small for my hand size, would be nice to have something a bit thicker when pulling the anchor up.

The double braid nylon for $125 is quality.


The other listing, the rope is not suitable for anchor rope.


You need at least 150' of rope +chain for hatzic hole on the Fraser, everywhere else on the Fraser 100' would work.
I use 150' of 3/8 nylon double braid (1/2" would be easier on your hands) with no chain, I hate the sound of chain on my aluminum boat. I've got 30' of chain I can add if I plan to fish hatzic hole but I'm rearly in that area.

Thanks guys. Yeah the one 250 foot length of rope looks decent. Honestly I'm just going to buy a new spool of it...I can't be bothered driving for hours to inspect a length of rope this long. I appreciate the links though.

Where is this Hatzic hole you speak of? We have not sturgeon fished on our boat yet but plan to get into it this year. We'll generally be launching from the Sumas canal or Island 22.

I suppose I'd rather have a little extra rope and not need it than need a little extra and not have it. With this in mind I might go for 150 feet instead of 100.
