I toss in my crayfish traps in the late evening in the creek beside my house here on the island, with any luck I will have enough for a full meal by morning, sometimes more, boiled or steamed up ,then dip in garlic butter...................YUMMY!!, great with pasta, or stir fried in black bean sauce

When I was 19 I was on the ferry to go camping on the island, back when ferries were 'somewhat' affordable.

Out the window I see some dolphins/porpoises jumping and turn to a friend and ask "Do we have dolphins here?"  Apparently we do, but in my defence when you see them on TV it's usually Florida or somewhere tropical and I was 19 years old.

So my friend says "I don't know...I guess so" 

But another friend who is very sure of himself overhears us and yells out "Those aren't dolphins! Those are salmon!"

"Umm...I don't think those--" But it was too late.

Several tourists overheard him point out the pod of jumping "salmon" and immediately started taking pictures and calling the kids "Joey! Joey come here! Look at the salmon"  There had to be 30 people at the window to see the "salmon" in under a minute.

I can say with quite a bit of certainty that if they were salmon they were the biggest salmon the ocean has ever seen, they had crazy pointed dorsal fins and really pointy noses.

There was in Richmond that only lasted a year or 2 as well.  Crawfish King I think it was called.  From review seemed food was ok but service was terrible.

I hear you, DeafGuy. When I first moved to Vancouver many years ago from the interior, I saw a guy with what appeared to be a 2 foot long shark in his catch bucket at Jericho Pier. "Holy frick there are sharks in the water" ran through my head. While technically correct - I'm sure I would have received some heckles for asking about it here - as local fishermen are very familiar with Dogfish.

If you are wondering what it was, you can guarantee there are many more that do too.

I've been on a lot of local rivers, streams, creeks, and have only come across one. Cool little Signal Crayfish that came across the creek to check me out.
