Squamish 2 Aug
« on: August 02, 2015, 10:35:50 PM »

Hit the Squamish this morning. Never seen it so busy over 50 guys shoulder to shoulder. Only stayed an hour or so and still only saw one fish bonked. Saw a couple of fish foul hooked too but they were surprisingly coloured and humped up too. Water levels were good though so hopefully the hot weather isn't harming this system too much.

We were out saturday and it was surprisingly slow too. Two years ago this weekend would have been a fish almost every cast.

Don't bother going this afternoon or tonight if you don't want to be caught in bumper to bumper traffic.  The Yoga Convention + Holiday travelers are moving back towards the city :)

There is fish, but few and far between compared to last Pink season.  Also, has anyone noticed they are a bit on the smaller side so far compared to previous seasons?

I was out Saturday with my friend. I landed one that was around 2 pounds. It was the smallest pink that I saw before.

Yet to catch one on the Squamish this season, but most of the Furry Creek ones I've caught have been very small ... 2 - 3 lbs average.

0 fish for 2 days out this weekend on the Squamish. Saw a few landed around me (with really long leaders...) and one on the spey with a small pink fly. Was surprised to see the amount of people on the river from first light both days. Spoke with a CO on Monday who had a whole whack of tickets handed out.

There's going to be even more people at the Squamish at first light this weekend.  The music festival is on and I bet some of them will try to save some money and camp right on the river.

2 years ago dfo sent seine boats to squamish area for the first time in about 40 years, 250,000 pinks taken, is this part of the reason the run is not that great. just asking.

The seine boats definitely reduced the number of spawners, but that doesn't explain why so many of the pinks taken so far are smaller than last season.   Of course it's just some personal observation and I by know means can claim it is definitely smaller based on any scientific studies. May be the toxic alge bloom or the big warm blob, that stretches from Alaska to California has reduced the their source of food over the last year which caused a higher mortality rate.

We're noticing some very small pinks on the Skagit river in Washington as well.  Perhaps all the offspring from the record runs in 2013 are outstripping their food supply.
