Campbell River Fishing Opportunities
« on: August 25, 2015, 03:32:33 PM »

Looks like my boss is sending me to Campbell River next week for a few days of work, knowing that I will take a few extra days to fish while I'm there. I'm unfamiliar with the area so I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction. Ideally I'd like to get on a boat for some saltwater fishing, and I'd be willing to pay for a guide. However, as a single person it becomes quite expensive if I don't have anyone to split it with. If I could get in on a charter that had an open seat, it would be win-win situation I think. Otherwise, if there are options to rent a boat I'd be open to that too. I really don't know the area; is it sheltered? Do you need to venture far to target salmon?

If I can't get out on a boat, I'm looking for options that are accessible in waders. Beach fishing for salmon would be cool, but I have no idea where to start with that.

Not sure what is available in terms of individual charters but this guy rocks...my pops and I did a charter with him and hit some very big fish earlier this month. He knows his stuff and is dialed in.

We fished around the the Green Can mostly and a bit off the hump,  all on the south end of Quadra.

Seems like that is the place to be, and would be doable to fish in a smaller boat if a charter like his isn't an option.

It's been a while, but if you want, you can rent a boat and make your way across to Cape Mudge where you can mooch or dead drift using live herring or go up discovery passage to Copper Bluff where you can fish along the kelp beds for rockfish, cabezon, lingcod, salmon and the odd halibut.

The local rental places will point you in the right direction and give you advice on tide conditions...just make sure they give you an extra tank of gas because at one point, you'll be going full throttle against the flow of the current.

Of course you can't go wrong with using a guide for the sake of navigation, but unless you're willing to spend several hundred dollars, I would rather rely on the boat rental places for advice and use my own knowledge and skill to fish casually.

There should be some pinks still coming through, if the river itself is open.  I have a great time there every summer for a couple hours to grab my four.  I go every August for a family reunion on a lake just out of town, I always make a point of fishing for a few hours and supplying a family dinner.

Follow the parked cars along the river.  Lots of fishable water.

PM me and I will give you a spot that seems to be available most of the time, unless it is REALLY busy.  During the week you should be good to go.  Fun to wade and walk the river.

Stop by River Sportsman and get the scoop when you get there...

Nice report back when you can.  I'm heading to Campbell River for a few days for the Sept long weekend.  I hope I get a chance to try out fishing up there.  I've never been that far north on the island before.

Try out the Tighee pool. Only rowboats allowed. I looked into it and it's pretty responsible for 3 hrs. Plus if you get a Chinook over 30 lbs you get a membership at the old boys club there. I also will be going up there mid Sept.

good suggestion on the Tyee Pool. It's one of BC's oldest fishing traditions. Now should be prime.
