I gave some thought of switching to braid for better hooksets and sensitivity but was told that braid would cut trough the porcelain guides over time. Anyone had a similar experience before?

I've been using braid for the last 4 or 5 years and I do believe it is harder on guides and I suspect it picks up more grit than mono. However my guides have been fine so far, so I personally have no direct evidence of increased wear and tear. Even if I go through a set of guides every 5-10 years i would still use it for the reasons you list. That's just the cost of doing business IMHO

My favourite pink/coho setup is 8'6" 6-12lb Med-fast with 2500 reel spooled with 8lb 0.010mm mono, casts a mile and I am very happy with it, have handled chums as well :D

it depends if your guides got ceramic insides or not , I have problem with my old sturgeon rod , but I was using 65lb braid on it I casted 20oz weights :) on my spinning setup I use 10 lb braid for over a month , and I fish every weekends with it - and no ceramic guides and so far look pretty neat .

When I am not fly fishing (quick stop on the roadside or when no room for back cast), I still use my son's spinning outfit he was given at one of Rod's fishing the future events in Steveston.  It's a 6' 6" Shakespeare Mantis Combo spooled with 8 pound mono.  I can chuck a 1/8 croc as far as I have ever needed to (clear across any trib of the Fraser) and it is a great fight with pinks, but has the backbone for for larger coho.
