Yeah, me too. I haven't been entirely fishless, but I get skunked a lot. Like 85%...
Don't worry, as a fairly new angler, you are doing just fine.
I still get skunked more often than not, especially if you put steelhead in the equation.
It's the overall experience that matters. The sooner you realize that, the more you will enjoy your fishing trips.
In case you haven't heard it before, there are five stages in the evolution of most anglers:
Stage 1: Catch
A Fish, any fish.
Stage 2: Catch as many fish as possible.
Stage 3: Catch the biggest fish.
Stage 4: Catch a difficult fish.
Stage 5: Enjoying fishing independent of catching.
IMO, far too many anglers get stuck in the second stage and choose the method that is likely to be the most productive (roe, worms, chironomids and so on).
Most of the time, I am a stage 4/5 angler, but I shamelessly regress to stage 2 and 3 occasionally, especially when sockeye are open for retention or when there are lots of angry, fresh chum or chinook in the system.
You are doing great, halcyon. Just keep at it. Don't let the promise of an easy fish push you to the Tamahi area.
