Is there a herring sale in Steveston this year and if so when, or did I miss it?

Dear Friends of the Herring Sale:
We were worried about sea lions and a gale force storm, but the herring sale is a GO for this Saturday, December 5th.

In Steveston, the sale starts at 8:00 AM and in Victoria it starts at 7:00 AM.

Before you come down on Saturday check Facebook or our website at www.fhkwc.ca to see that the sale is still on.

The herring are bigger than we have seen for several years.
    The Seabillys Band is back.
A new herring bagging system will make the line move faster.

Please spread the word.

See you on Saturday.

Arrived yesterday at 7:45am, took just over 2 hours to reach the front of the line.  Was still a 2hr line up when I left around 11.  Nice to see so much money being raised for a good cause.  Met some great people in line and the band was excellent.  Now to get down to the task of filleting 60 lbs of herring.  Anyone have any good pickling recipes? :-)

They really need to get their act together. 1000s upon 1000s upon 1000s (really) of people corralled like cattle into only 1 single purchase exit. Local parking a nightmare and a heck of a burden on local residents. I saw 2 "line-rage" incidents and a woman that nearly broke her wrist falling down on a wire by a poorly set up tent. Average waits pushing 4 to 5 hours (if you did not get their before 8am). Why no pre-purchasing online? You could arrange multiple pick up points at the pier, spread the pressure out. And Cash only? - That's asking for trouble if any cash disappears.

It's a great cause but the execution feels like it was organized and manged by the high school glee club bake sale.

Buy it on amazon and have it delivered  by drones.
It's a charity thing, the overhead stays down.
They're raising money more than they're selling herring.
If it wasn't such a deal there wouldn't be such lines.
It's up to you to decide if it's worth it.

Hey Dennis I'm betting you don't know the half about what actually goes on to make this CHARITY event happen. If you did, you wouldn't be running your mouth like a freakin tool. Hundreds of people volunteer their time and effort beyond just the hours of the sale and you better believe they do the best they can with the tools they have. If you do know what really happens, get off your a** and be an organizer if you think it's a good cause. It's mind boggling how you can sit behind your computer and bash people who make this event such a big success. Absolutely unreal. How about a huge thank you to all the people who made it happen when it almost didn't happen in the first place. Give your head a shake.

n8, you are right (although a bit extreme). I started this thread to simply find out when he sale was so I could get some delicious herring and help a hood cause.  I didn't really give much thought to who put the event on.  I am involved with couple of different organizations, but we do not put on an event even close to this scale and that is hard.  I can't even imagine this.

So,  although it is a little late,  I would like to thank each and every person involved. I truly mean it.  The old CKNW event was one of my favourite days of the year as a young kid.  Getting up early,  but skipping breakfast so I can have fresh herring fried to a crisp.  Yummm. I also learned how to operate a fillet knife.  Good times. .  Thank you again to everyone,  for more than the event but for helping me make some new memories. .
