What is an economical aluminum boat and engine combo to get if you just want to use it for crossing the Fraser to get to some bars and for some lake fishing. Let's say I need to fit 2 to 3 people on it.

12 ft? 14ft? Getting there as fast as possible is not really an issue...just getting there is good enough.

I have a 12 ft with a 9.8 it is rather low and would like to upgrade to a 15 or 20 hp. I would think that a 14 with a 20 or 25 would be great. But if you plan on using for the lakes you may want to look at a 9.9 for those trips.

you would get into a 12 with a 10 or 15 for under $2000 you might even get lucky and find one for under $1000 but you have to watch what you get.

20 hp are only ever on 14 fter  which are around $2000 and up.

I don't know much about these boat but what I do know is check the rivits well and maybe bring a compression tester of the motor and if that is ok the rest is not to hard to repair.

Expect to add some extra bucks to send the motor in for a good tune up before you head out onto the river. Better safe than sorry. Expect to spend $100 on insurance and transfer on the trailer.

Then go out and invest in some good jackets and a Canucks sticker!

We used the buy and sell over the internet to find our boat. The good boats sure go fast so call as soon as it comes on.  We have a 14 foot lund with 20 hp johnson and it is good for the fraser, around belcarra and rocky point as well as lakes.  We also use a electric motor.  We got the whole package for around 3 grand with trailer,seats, rod holder, downrigger etc.  We usually have 4 to 6 people in it so for us it was a good choice.

Take your time.  I looked for 2 years before I found my boat.  There is a lot of crap out there.  I was looking at boats for $6000 that were obviosly not cared for.  What does that say about the motor?  I finally saw a boat that was older (1980) and very well cared for.  I bought it on the spot for $100 under asking price.  It's been perfect for me and can pull arround a tube for fun!  Be patient and get what you want, not what you need.

12' with a 9.9 is a lake boat.  Don't go in the Fraser with it.
