Rivers to fish around Port Hardy and Port McNeill
« on: March 27, 2016, 11:24:15 AM »

We are moving from Vancouver to Port Hardy and I do not have a boat, but would love to fish some of the rivers around there. Wondering if anyone knows or a has a list of rivers to fish? I would really appreciate you help.

Thanks

Quatse River, Port Hardy.  Nimpkish River, Port McNeill  but I suspect you will end up purchasing a boat before you know it. Have fun up there

Keogh Cluxewe south of PH.  All those rivers have sizable runs of Pinks that provide great beach fishing in summer. There's a river north of PH but can't remember it's name. The Marble west towards Port Alice. The Goodspeed also west. There's also rivers south of PM right down to the Salmon at Kelsey Bay.

riptide - thanks for the suggestions. A boat isn't in my plans for now, but you've said the same thing as others - that sooner or later I'll need a boat.

RalphH - awesome suggestions. Where can I start in April?

Even though I knew when I left Vancouver, that it was going to be beautiful up here - I did not anticipate the beauty that the North Island has. So far, I've seen Kimpish Lake, Ida Lake, Marble River (closed trail). I'm truly excited to see the rest.

I haven't been up there for over 40 years and then it wasn't at that time. The rivers on the East Coast were heavily effected in the collapse of winter steelhead stocks that hit the east coast of the Island 10 to 15 years ago and I don't know how they are doing now. As well as the Salmon the Adam/Eve systems was once known for good late season fishing for steelhead that were of good size.. The Nimpkish has steelhead available for much of the year but in small to modest numbers. Rivers in the North end such as the Nahwitti had late runs for good sized fishing but may have been effected by logging in recent years. I don't think there is much road access to those rivers.

There is also respectable summer run opportunities up there. Inquire locally and do some google searches. Also check into shore fishing for salmon in the salt water.
