Government sponsored petition to remove salmon farms
« on: April 12, 2016, 08:16:01 PM »

From Alex Morton:

I thought you guys would like to know there is a government sponsored petition calling for legislated removal of salmon farms from our oceans. This is unprecedented! If salmon farms concern you sign and share.

https://petitions.parl.gc.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-270

We now have the tools to restore wild salmon by reading their immune systems, which can tell us where and how we are hurting the fish. We can then change our behaviour exactly where and when the fish need it the most and then we can go back and ask the fish if we made it better for them.

This takes the guesswork out of salmon restoration - incredibly powerful, but while this is Canadian science, it is not being used. Perhaps because it could reveal some uncomfortable truths.

At the same time, Canadians are investing in closed containment aquaculture, which is the way of the future of this industry.

So - if the Trudeau government hears from enough of us, I think there is a chance we could get moving on bringing back wild salmon and pioneering aquaculture that really does feed people.

It's up to us!

Oddly enough, the riding this lady represents is the same area I grew up in. I've recounted many times the damage done to traditional lobster harvesting areas by the Saddle Island feed lot and how it was rammed through the approval process, despite strong opposition from local residents. I spent many hours on the beach there as a kid. See the video and tell me why a feed lot would be sited in that area. Looking at the video, you can see both Saddle and Gravel islands to the left of the shot.If you really want to see what kind of things that have been done in this area, google cooke saddle island nova scotia.
GOOD!

Yes - Please sign. I can absolutely vouch for the ruinous effect the farms have had in the area she represents. I grew up in this lady's riding and I'm more than sure that the way Cooke Aquaculture has spoiled an area that lobster was harvested for generations is one of her motivating factors. Good! Please sign it.
