Radio tag studies done in the Salish sea indicate coho and chinook smolts raised and released from hatcheries have lower survival rates than wild fish.

People seem to forget we had a an earlier collapse in the 70s when seal stocks were about 1/8th of today's seal population.  We then switched over to heavy hatchery enhancement at a time ocean survival rates were very high. This disguised the original collapse. Surprisingly seal #s increased perhaps subsidized by hatchery salmon production.  In the early 90s rates declined dramatically and stayed low.
