Sea-Run’s Weekend Fishing Report and Weekly Outlook– March 3rd, 2018SteelheadInconsistency is likely the best word to describe the Winter Steelhead we have had from the start of the season to present time. Mixed in with some slower days are the good days.
March is typically the peak month for a lot of systems locally, and this is often when we can see our biggest pushes or fish, or have the bulk of a run in the river system at the given time. With warming temperatures come potential better opportunities for fly fishing as well - Steelhead can often be more responsive to flies in March and April.
Winter Chinook We finally have some seasonal weather upon us this week, and it’s going to be worth your while to get out there and try your hand at our local Winter Chinook fishery.
Fishing has remained steady as of late, but it was seemingly a tougher go these past 2 weeks due to the blast of Wintery weather we received!
Peetz Fishing rep and Saltwater enthusiast Shea O’Grady was recently in to drop off our stock of new Peetz Spoons and Lures. All we can say is wow!
Our recent Peetz Spoon Display that was dropped off this ThursdayBetween the Pesca Spoons and Peetz Spoons, the guys here at the shop have been doing well with both offerings.
River FishingSteelheadThe Vedder-Chilliwack River has often been the better producer for Steelhead so far this Season. It has without a doubt been a more difficult year than those we have seen in recent times, but there have been some good days on the water. Being there on the right day in the right locations has been critical, but do not get discouraged as you never know when you will bump into a good school or push of fish. There haven’t really been any particular areas that have been putting more fish out than others as fish have been caught from the lowest sections to the highest sections.
While fish can often be very aggressive this time of the year, they can also be very picky. When fishing larger spots, it can certainly be worth it to work over the spot a bit longer than you normally would. Sometimes it can take a few drifts to entice a bite, and sometimes it can take a change-up of a presentation or presentation sizing to entice a bite.

Other rivers kicking out fish have included the Stave and Chehalis Rivers. The Stave has been a bit more consistent than the Chehalis from reports we have gathered. The Stave has been hatchery augmented to create more angling opportunity for hatchery Steelhead in the area. Due to its structure and substrate, the Stave is also a great system to swing flies, and these fish are quite responsive to flies this time of the year.

Saltwater ReportMarch is an absolutely fantastic month in the Saltwater for Winter Chinook and Prawns.
Areas that have been producing fish include Bowen, the mouth of the Capilano, areas of Howe Sound, Tunstall, and much more.
Spoons are typically your “go-to’s” this time of the year due to the aggressive nature of these feeding fish, and bait is often not needed to have a successful day. Your typical colour contrasts are greens and blues, and it’s good to pair up your lures with your flasher colours.
We have recently received great stocks of Pesca and Peetz lures!
