Carp On The Fly
« on: August 17, 2004, 11:42:02 PM »

Was up at a friends cabin last weekend near Pemberton and finally caught my 1st carp....ended up being a good 5 lbs on a dry fly off the surface. :o Hammered it and took off. Anyone else catch them on the fly rod? Was using a Tom Thumb. C&Red 3 Rainbows as well for the total of about 2 hours actually spent fishing. 8)

Now THAT sounds like fun!
Any of the Deer Lake goers know if the carp rise for dries?
I know the goldfish on steroids in the lake down the street don't care for any of mine  :P

If you hook a piece of a bread crust on your fly the carp will like that sandwich better ;D

Using bait such as bread kinda defeats the purpose IMO,  unless you tied a fly that looked like bread.   ;D In which case the carp should be accustomed to rising to bread.  I've always wondered if you could get hordes of hatchery rainbow to rise to a fly that looked like those pellets they are served while at the hatchery =D

Any patterns that can look like bread out there?  I'm thinking spun deer hair....anybody?

What color are those hatchery pellets?  I swear the trout will go mad on the dry right after they've been released into a lake  :D

Actually, the fly that look the most like a pellet is 'Tom Thumb'.  I use it very successfully on newly released hatchery trout..
