Port Renfrew
« on: August 14, 2004, 01:42:01 AM »

Simply amazing we arived at about 1:00 in the afternoon on the 11 of august and frantically set up our camp in order to try and get out before it was too late in the after noon.   Hit  the water by 3:00 and slowly navigated through the narrow shallow river from the Marina out to the renfrew bay. We were told it was rough seas and very foggy sure enough . As we entered the bay we could see out to Owen point and that was it a complete white out a wall of fog. This was my first time fishing the west coast of the island. My wife had bought me a GPS the night before i was leaving so i did't have time to read up on it, so my buddie and i decide that we should go back in and study up before commiting our selfs to mother nature. When we hit the dock there was a crowd gatherd at the scale and cleaning tables so we wandered over to see what was up. 54 lbs Chinook hanging on the scale. This just got us all pumped up for the next day. The people out there were friendly helpful and willing to teach and share knowledge. A nice change from the GONG show on the mainland. This nice old guy offerd to leed us out to Campers creek  where all the action had been. So at 5:45 am we left following him through the tricky little river which was only 2 feet in alot of places then out to the main bay where we had turned back the day before. As we followed he let me know where all the hazards were and suggested where to mark my way points. Again the fogg was super thick 20 minute boat we were ready to fish.4 to 5 foot rollers and fog YEAH BABY west coat fishing. We were trolling anchovies around 27 to 35 feet an hour went by and then whack buddie hooks a beuty 22 pounder. Then as the day went the Springs were being caught all over the place it was like trolling in rush hour 60 to 70 boats in a 2 sqaure mile radius . Every other boat scaping them Chinook. I finally got one hooked after having my choovies stolen sevral times. It was a 13 lber my first ever ocean caught Spring. It was about 4 o clock we stayed out till 6pm only two but not bad for day one. Today was red hot but they just keept taking our bait just behind the hook. We went through 20 choovies none hooked . So i got fed up and switched to the cap Coho set red flasher 6 foot leader pistachio hootchie got it  out there sat down for less than 30 seconds  BAMM fish on about a 9 lbs Wild COHO the fight was great even better than my 13 lbs spring. For the next hour and a half no stop COHO after COHO all wild but what a hoot caught and released 5 and lost about 5 more. Unfortunatly my buddies girlfriend called and he had to gohome earlier than planned but what a great day and a half.
