Cartop Rack Recommendation

Hello All
I recently bought a 12 foot Sylvan cartop boat. It has a 57" beam. I'll be putting it on top of my F150 (6.5' box) when my wife and I will be towing our travel trailer over yonder.

Questions:
1) What type of rack have you found to be best for side trips to other lakes once base camp is set up?
2) Is a rack fitted onto the roof the canopy strong enough for rougher terrain, or should I focus ona rack that wraps around the canopy and is fixed to the sides of the truck bed?

While I'd I'd love to shell out a bunch of $$$ and get an EZ loader, I'm recently on a fixed income.

So, does anyone have some thoughts?
