On The Bar Again, August 19
« on: August 21, 2004, 09:44:08 PM »

Enjoyed the afternoon so much with Terry, Rodney and Nina the other day decided to head to the bar at Bowmans to try to get my mind of the protest slated for Saturday.

Arrived at the Old Orchard Road launch around 7:30 and only 2 outfit there. ???

There was around 30 there the 2 days before, o forgot the sockeye fishing was  now closed for the rec guys.

Motoring down below were we fished on Wedneday, FN nets were hitting the water for there final fishing for the year, I hope.

As I headed down noticed Jim a friend landing a jack spring so slipped in a bit below him.

We chatted about the state of the fisheries are in and about the protest that he agreeded had to be done to try to jar FOC into some type of proper mamagement on the Fraser River before it is too late.

We fished together until he left at 10, with no more fish for either of us.

Got a call on the cel from Dennis saying that he would like to bring out his friend Jim from Ontario. who was visiting

I had planned only a short trip but I knew Jim would enjoy being out on the Fraser so picked them up at 11 for an afternoon of angling.

We headed to the Flood Bar above the Sumas and spent 5 hours there without a bite of any kind and only had 2 naps and found 2 agates but one was one of the biggest I have ever found.

Eat your heart out Doc. ;D

I told Jim if he wanted some bites would take him for some cutthroat action with the remaining 24 worms I had left from the other trip.

The Westwind is blowing as the front moves in from the West as we work our way downstream picking out  route around the snags in the Big Eddy area.

We anchor and no time in to fish after fish, be it mostly Northern Pike Minnows.

Jim shows his skill as a pickerel fisher from Belliville Ontario as he out fishes me badly, getting around 17 pike minnows, 2 steelhead smolt , one small wild cut and even a freshwater crayfish.

I end up with a couple of steelhead smolts and around 7 PK's.

With the worms gone and the West wind picking up we head for a enjoyable dinner at the Best Western with them picking up the tab. ;D

Next up this week, my annual trip to the Thompson for jack springs. ;D ;D

Heading to pull some worms now for another trip for cut's later this coming week. They do not seem to be in yet in any numbers but soon some nice 15 to 17 inchers ;D.

We use to fish into October until things heated up on the Vedder. September through then is a hot time to bar fish the Fraser as you have most species running and of course the big Harrison whites over 50 pounds.

I do not know how far I will fish this year as with the Thompson steelhead are on the decline and you start getting them then and everyone is very precious now.

Talking of steelhead I wonder how many summer run ironheads all the netting in the Fraser this summer have caught such as the Coq. fish?
