I'm an old schooly type of fisherman who has always used monofilament line.  I've heard a lot about these new lines some of which are called Fireline, Spiderline, Teflon Braided line, and I'm sure there a few more, but I don't remember them all,  and they are all supposed to be thinner in daimeter than mono yet still retain extreme lb test ratings.

I've heard good things like...  they are stronger than mono....  they have 0 stretch for better feel...  they are thiner in diameter so less drag in the water...  no memory retention...  etc....

I've heard bad things like...  they are too strong when you get a snag...  because there is no stretch.. the line is brittle...  less diameter means they get pinched in the reel resulting in birds nests...  lots of birds nests since the line wants to spring off the reel... etc....

So rather than go to a store and listen to the salesman sell me the most expensive line out there.... I thought I could ask here for people and their own experiences with these lines.

If you have used these lines before, please be specific about brand and model.

I have come to prefer Power pro lines.  It doesn't seem as sensitive to knicks like Fireline and also seems to have thinner diameter.

Always mono for me.

Havnt used much but the spider wire had all the problems you stated.  Also sucks when the guy snags a dog in the vedder and wipes out all the lines in the run as it runs downstream.  That stuff is like a knife with it rubs past your line.

I have never found a need for stronger line/ smaller dia line for salmonids in my applications.  Maybe if you are fishing sturgeon or halibut.

I've used Fireline for several years. Advantages: thinner diameter (14 lb. test has the diameter of 6 lb. test), super sensitive, no stretch (better hook set)

Disadvantages: very costly, line frays, tendency to dig into the reel. If you tangle with someone else's line it's pretty much guarantee that you will have to cut your line. (The thin diameter is not conducive to untangling)

I spent the 1st 1/2 of the year with braid tuff XP... the 2nd 1/2  with fireline the fireline wins for several reasons.

The braid after hours in the water picks up water and becomes thicker and carries weight... making casting harder and less effective.

I like the way the fireline loads the spool after a couple casts... very tight and I had no digging in once the line was spooled correctly.

The Braid has on occasion caught a hook while being fished in the fraser gong show and caused a split  nearly 1/2 way thru the spool.

The fireline keeps its small diameter and has a sort of waxy quality that resists water pickup, making casting very smooth.

The fireline performed well in the untangling process when the few birdnests finally did happen.

Obviously I would strongly recomend Fireline about 30 pound test.
