Chilliwack River, October 5th 2004
« on: October 05, 2004, 04:47:56 PM »

Got to the lower river at first light. Actually I had to wait a few minutes for enough light to fish. My first cast drifted down and near shore. It bobbled a bit and I halfheartedly lifted up to pull it off the rocks - mistake. A coho sprang out of the water shaking the hook. Oops! Three casts later I missed another take. About half hour later caught and released a 15 pound or so spring. Then it go quiet, and I decided to go exploring.

I went to the upper river and checked out a few spots. This was new to me, and very different fishing with rapids, boulders etc. I walked around a bit thinking about some of the posts I've seem on this site about fishing that kind of water, and where fish might be. I spotted a coho and cast to it - no take on the first cast. Second try and fish on - for a minute or so until I lost it.  Noticed some of the other fishermen with a long distance from float to weight - half the time the float was not in the water. A fair number of fish taken were foul hooked.

All in all a good day.  The rain will probably make the next few days better.

I was on the river today as well, from 6 to noon and the weather was excellent. Sunny with very few clouds. Temperature was a little cold this morning, but the sun took care of that once it had arisen

I was at the lower Vedder until dark in the pouring rain. I saw the white spring boys take out 4 springs from approx. 20-40lbs. Nasty! No one getting any hoes though (which is of course what I was looking for). The water was still quite clear right up until dark and didn't seem to be on the rise yet. Good luck tommorrow boys!!

Its a big late, but better late than never.

Started off the day at first light just above Tamahi bridge.  Coho and Springs jumping and moving everywhere.

I fished roe to start with and immediately had hits and nice coho on but couldn't get a decent hookset.  Switched up to a single orange jensen egg and tried a couple of casts.  Bang, float straight under - 7 lb wild coho.  No other luck for us besides a small jack spring.  Move downstream to "On the Way", and found a slot stacked with coho but two guys chucking spoons in it.  So continued downstream.

Second cast, into a nice spring that ripped off line and cartwheeled around the pool up and down, but finally bust me off around a small rock in the next run below.  Shiny chrome female chinook around 20,  Re-rigged and next cast BOOM into another.  Same thing around the pool, up and down and then booted it downstream... Running after it was crazy and it eventually got away.  Another big one.  3rd Spring actually rose in front of me about 5 mins before hooking it.  Big male, silver chrome porpoised and then I hooked him.  Great fight, but didnt get too far as I kept the pressure on.  I was looking for a female for roe but the parents want fish to smoke so he came home with me.  This happened two more times until 2 pm and it was fantastic.  Sun was out, water crystal clear, all on a single Jensen egg.

Moved d/s to Peach Rd.  Tonnes of people there, and the weather started changing to the rain.  Saw fresh coho moving upstream and a couple of clean chinooks in the lower pools.  Also saw another guy fall in but managed to get up quickly.  Take care when wading.

Tight lines everyone.
