Chehalis Nov 15

Fished from parking lot to canyon mouth at first light. All this bear talk has made me a little nervous about travel in the canyon in the dark.Water colour was good, height perfect after the day of rain previous. Most fish appeared to be stale though,no doubt an effect of the netting opportunities afforded the locals by DFO.More on that later.Heavey rain started at about 8am.Some fresher fish started to move in as water started to rise.My catch-2 coho 1male 1female,too much colour for me so released in water,1chrome male about 8 pounds foul hooked released unharmed, and 1 beauty chrome female of six pounds bonked.Fishing slowed to nada as river blew out.Maybe later towards weekend if river drops.
Dissappointing numbers of fish for the conditions though.I would like to offer my observations on the apparent disaperance of coho.I beleive the natives are being somewhat unfairly blamed for the deliberate incompetence of two levels of government.Yes I know there are serious over harvesting issues being ignored on the Fraser but as far as the coho are concerned I think you have to look at Gordos buddies. Not long ago they were talking about closing the hatcheries, money has been cut over the last years for brood stook and the administration of programs.Volunteers I have fished with have told me the same thing. When DFO tells the natives to go ahead and net as usual and yet the provincial guys know what the runs are going to be is this the fault of the people doing the harvesting?Sure some good numbers of fish have made it up to spawn but these rivers need tens to hundreds of thousands of fish.Sports fishing is a billion dollar industry in B.C. when will provincial and national officials stop playing with the science and respect this resource. The way it looks this year we sporty's are the endangered species. There,i had my rant for what it is worth.
