Vedder On February 16th
« on: February 16, 2005, 08:37:27 PM »

Here is my attempt at a Chris Gasdsen report. ;D

Began the day with a late start. Had 2 classes at school this morning (Wood Tech and Computer Networking) Rushed home and organized my vest and other gear to hit the road. Search around everywhere for some surgical tubing to hold my lead on the line but have seemed to have lost it. Anyways, we leave the house at around 11:15am. Takes us about 40-45 minutes to arrive at where we are going for lunch. No, today we didnt stop at cookies. Neither did Chris. :o (See below)

After a good lunch and running on a full stomach we proceed onto my favorite spot on the river. Along the dyke I see a former member off here chatting with Toothpick Tom. Didn't stop to talk as was determined to reach the spot. Keep rolling along and I see a blue nissan pickup truck with the door open on the driver's side.  Get out of my truck and glance at the windows and there happens to be a Maple Leaf Sticker. ;D Sure enough done taking a look with the red DP hat it is Chris. Chatted for a few minutes and he informed me he was just starting as well. He introduced himself to my mom and shortly after we went are own ways in search of chrome. (Hope you got into some today) I dressed up quickly and walked down to the spot I wanted to fish. "Good, nobody is there, oh but maybe cause theres no fish?" I cast away with my roe bags and feel the odd tap but were more then likely small trout. Move up river on the opposite bank and try my luck again.....nothing :(. BTW the water was in prime shape like it should be with very good visibility. Temperature was hovering around 8-10 degrees I would say in the sun but very cold in the shade.

The time is now about 3:30 and figure it is time to drive to another spot up river. As leaving I spotted Chris' truck again and he was probably down at the bank fishing as only toothpick was at the vehicles.

Next stop is about 1-1.5 km up river, there was about 15 anglers out but everyone was polite and spaced out. Within 30 minutes I see down river a fishermans rod forked over. After a short fight I see the guy toss a fish in mid air to the bank so it was a hatchery. Not too big not too small, but why would he throw it so far in mid air? ??? Another 1/2 hour goes by and a fellow has a small fish on his line. I did not get a chance to look at it but he did release it.

I change up riggings several times but no dice but I wasn't expecting much today as it was my first time out there fishing since December 28. Like they say; it is the fish of a thousand casts.

There was a beautiful sunset tonight to the west and I finished fishing just before dark.

Was on the road again by 6:30pm. Stopped at the Whatcom road Petro Can to fill up, gas was 75.4 when we filled up plus a additional 3.5 cents off a litre. :D

Tomorrow I will be out on a local flow tossing feathers in search of some Dolly Varden.

There ya go....Now Chris and others out today, lets hear your adventure. :)

Very good and interesting report Aaron, well written. You have a super Mum to come out fishing with you and it was a pleasure to meet her today.

Too bad you did not find a steelhead but I think it was a slow day all around in the lower river anyway as I heard of one fish lost were you saw Tom and the others. Rod also picked up a nice hatchery in the late afternoon and I believe a wild was taken first thing n the morning in the same area.

I think too many of us old timers spent too much time visting today and not enough time fishing but it was such a lovely day to just soak up the Valley sunshine.  ;D

I tried a number of my previous hot runs but came up empty except for finding 2 floats. On the way home I stopped at a local golf course and found a dozen golf balls in the ditch so the day was not that bad after all.

Gas prices are quite low in the CHWK area as the last two days gas has been 66 cents a litre at the gas stations at Lickman Road.

As per usual, I got to the river a little after 4:30,(work really messes up fishing time). There was no one on the spot I wanted to fish, so I gumbooted it out there.  Threw everything but the kitchen sink at them without a sniff.  Decided to try  the famous one last  cast just before dark. While enjoying the glorious sunset and beautiful weather I  lost track of my float in the failing light. To make a short story long I spotted it just as it took a dive at the tailout of the run. About 10 minutes later, I had about a 15 lb. fish ALMOST to the beach. You know what's next. I got a real good look at it but in the bad light couldn't make out if it was hatchery or not. Trying not to drag it onto the beach gave it a chance to roll over and spit the hook. First fish I've come close to landing this year. Maybe my luck will change and Pin Head will cut me some slack.I'll be back at it tommorrow after work that's for sure.

Well RVT, good on you for not taking the chance to pull a wild fish up onto the rocks and beating its self sensless. Instead you may have lost a good sized hatch fish (which you may have released anyways), your first to the bank even. I hope you have a banner day soon because to many people would have dragged that fish onto the rocks regardless if they knew it was a hatchery fish or not.

He's now living in Chilliwack. Yes, he's a hoot to fish with.
