First Bar Fishing Trip On The Fraser For 2005
« on: June 19, 2005, 10:48:04 PM »

As it was Father's Day Gwyn and I got to do what we wished this afternoon. ;D

It was a lovely day here in the Valley so we decided to use our new freedom to check out the clarity of the Fraser.

As we reached Island 22 launch we saw a good number of empty trailers so a number of other anglers had the same idea.

I had been down at the launch in the early morning and had talked to the creel survey boys and they said the fishing had been slow but the word was that the Albion test fishery was starting to pick up the last few days. Also saw the Master there,  he was getting the Jet boat ready to take some clients out sturgeon and bar fishing. He would be guiding the next 3 days, lucky clients experencing the Master's magic.

We have the Leaf Craft in the water and in no time she is rolling, rolling, rolling right along ;D ;D ;D to Maple Leaf Bar.

We pass lots of boats sturgeon fishing and on arriving at Maple Leaf Bar there is 3 boats bar fishing.

We check the water clarity and have a bit of a discussion about it, and we decide it is about a foot, a bit iffy for fishing, but possible.

We settle into our lawn chairs and enjoy the scenery but the blasted mosquitos are almost unbearable.

I put on a pair of gloves to keep the critters from enjoying some of my blood.

We pass the time by cleaning up the Leaf Craft and as the sun start to set these flying, biting, blood sucking creatures come out in squadrons. They dive, they buzz and they bite. They become so bad we hurrily pack and head for the launch. We are fishless and with a little less blood to show for the 3 hours of fishing

I believe the river will now continue to drop and clear daily and it will not be long until the bar bells will begin to chime their sweet music along the Fraser River bars. ;D ;D

I will be there thats for sure, will you?

What's the latest on Island 22 ? The last time I heard was that it was being eroded. Can you fish it off it now ?

Yes it is eroding badly, no place to fish except off rip rap further down from campsite. The bb 's have taken sockeye there in the past.

You will have to breakdown and travel in the Leaf Craft to Maple Leaf Bar. ;D ;D

Yup already been out 3 times this year bar fishing and nothing to show for it. A few hits but nothing more. Once the clarity improves it will be much better. Chris what do you find most productive in the upper river? Just a green or orange top with chrome body? Do you use scents or jensen eggs? Just curious.

All I use is a #0 silver, mylar wings with the red top at this time of year. The green works also but I stick to the red top for no reason though.

While out fishing yesterday Gwyn told me this little story. A friend of his dad have taken 9 springs with the one I use or it could have been the green top not positive. He then switched and tried several others for a while, switched back to his orignal and took his 10th.

I like many others use to buy several different colours etc. a few years ago but not now, why change success. In all the respect to tackle shops as they have to make a living too but they like to promote others as it helps sales.

One year many years ago while bar fishing in the Fall when the pinks were running one of my sons hooked 9 pinks using a #4 with the green top, I believe they did not make them with mylar wings then. We and a friend using something different got none. :o

So there is a tip for this years run of pinks if you wish to bar fish for them, maybe just a fluke who knows but that is fishing of course.

Also in the Fall in the old days at Bowmans we used the half and half (yellow & orange) with roe, deadly on the Harrison white jacks.
