sunday aug 7 squish
« on: August 07, 2005, 07:47:47 PM »

wow.  really blah day on the squish near mamquam.

there from 9 to 3pm using gear...saw maybe 25/30 fish caught with a total of 15 fisheman - fly fisherman were outfishing the gear guys 4 to 1..

what can i say but the fishing was SLOW compare to 2 yrs ago...or even fishing reports from saturday...which compared to today sound freakin incredible and unfortunately i was one day late from a truly good day...in fact a lot people fishing today only caught 1 pink...and barely that...

perhaps the cn train spillage of toxic crap made an impact..i don't know...but today was definetly a weak day for a trad't strong pink run...

:(

No for a number of reasons and the main cause being the floods of 2003 that hit the river hard. Now with the Cheakamus tragedy I hope they dont even think about opening it! It would even be greater if all of Howe Sound is closed to retention in my opinion. To ensure a future returning stock in 2007 for both the Cheak and Squamish rivers.

Thanks for the report Dennis.

Vince, 2005 Squamish regulation changes can be found on this page. Always check for the latest updates though, especially after what took place in the Cheakamus last Friday, some more changes may be made soon. In my Lower Mainland report page, I now have the regulation links listed under each system, hopefully it is easier for people to find the information needed.

cohokid, some friendly advice, while catching and releasing a great number of fish in one day is a lot of fun, it maybe better off stopping at one point before you catch too many, especially when there is conservation concern for the stock that you are fishing for. Just a suggestion of course, in the end it's up to you to make your own decision on what you should do ask an angler as long as it is legal. :)

Aquaboy:
There is a internal DFO meeting on Thursday and a local sportfish advisory board conference call on Thursday night to discuss that very same issue. I think it's safe to say that Howe Sound will allso be closed to pink and chinook retention. Thats the feeling I get from talking to the locals and everone up my way feels that is the correct thing to do. I can't reiterate enough.... THE CHEAKAMUS  IS VIRTUALLY DEAD....VERY LITTLE LEFT ALIVE. I hope people take this very seriously. The Cheakamus is going to see some serious conservation issues over the next 20 years. As much as 1/2 of the total Cheakamus 2005 chinook run has died in the river ( the rest of the fish are arriveing daily). Pinks on a all ready low return get hit again! There's no a hope in hell it will open this year. Watch for updates soon.
